The problem with pistols is you really have to get those head shots, few can really be good with them, especially on any tanked suits.
They are really finishers for most situations.
In terms of side arms, nothing will come close.

I can get close to 20 kills with just the nova knife as a weapon. I cant use the nova knife against shotgun scouts though. Getting a proto scanner and maxing my Bolt proficiency. Scrambler pistol is my weapon of choice but against a good strafer its useless as you need more shots before of he deficiency against armor.
PLC takes some getting used to but is good once you can.
Flaylocks are an awesome companion to the NKs, especially against flipping shotgunners. They don't need quite the accuracy as you can get them with the splash damage.
So NKs for the high HP suits, Flaylocks for the ones you cant get with NKs.
