Over the three years I've played this game, DS's has been either OP things of death, or hardly usable things that were way to easily shot out of the sky by AV or a rail in the redline. All through this time, DS's never were good at what they were actually supposed to do (like all vehicles tbh), or both (like now, which ADS's acting as Gunships, T I DS's acting as throwaway hulls) which is spewing badass clones into the fray.
There's two reasons for this, one in which is shared by all vehicles, and the other is DS specific. The first reason is that maps are WAY too small to really use their true potential (especially the older maps), and I doubt we can get much larger anytime soon, unless of course, if we go next gen). Therefore, we can't really fix that for now (Unless Master splinter can somehow get us a bigger map without degrading the gameplay anymore, which would impress the **** out of me).
The second reason is simply that Pilots aren't rewarded for flying. The transport bonuses are low, and only works if the infantry can survive long enough to actually do something. There needs to be a lot more ways that Pilots can get points while in a DS. For example, infantry can be given the option of calling for a DS to come and pick them up. they fly in, and get points for doing a pickup. hen, the Pilot flies to the location, and drops them off, and gets points for that. Then their can be several additional ones, such as they survived for a long time after dropping, they killed people, the ADS could have a you killed peple who were shooting at them or were even in the vicinity of the drop point, etc.
If these two things were fixed, DS's in general would become a lot more fun to play, and becomes a infantry's best way to get onto the front lines, which would be just great, as the more connected players are, the better.

2) As far as rewards, I think they're fine as well. Your goal as a transport DS is to get people to places where they can do things, if your squad gets killed as soon as they land, you didn't do you job. Same thing as a gunship pilot, if your gunners aren't killing people, you're not doing your job. Transport WP is low because it's an easy, low risk role, and gunship piloting isn't that low, to be honest, especially if you have a squad order.
The biggest problem with dropships is how underutilized they are by the rest of the squad.
1: I can cross the map in pretty much any vehicle under 30 seconds, DS's in about 15. That's way too short of a time, which is why transport-based vehicles aren't really seen as full time vehicles. Also, I'd also like to add that the player count is too small.
2: Go fly in a DS for 5 matches, and tell me if you can get higher than 5k WP's in total, and I'm talking pure flying.
3: Gunships don't exist in Dust.
4: If you think transport is easy, you're an idiot.

Maybe some kind of range limitation, or a way shorter spawn count (or both)?

I agree with parts of this, uplinks have way too many spawns on them especially when combined with amarr +2 spawns per level. The other problem is that people almost NEVER leave vehicles of their own volition, if you gave dropships a way to boot people the **** out they'd be a lot more valuable. I have flown MCRU dropships, where 6 people have spawned in and refused to leave. In a similar manner to how uplinks need to be place to funnel people towards objectives, dropships need to be able to kick people out (at low heights) so they don't just get to ride in the dropship all match but instead they have to go do something.
That does suck, and needs to be fixed. However, people has issues with redline dropping. Maybe this feature is locked when in the redline?
