The problem is that every 'feature' implemented within the last three patches has been a vast increase of monetisation from earlier methods. There hasn't been a single major content update that wasn't done already that has been to innocently improve the game rather than milk money from it.
Strongboxes are a particularly disgusting example so people are flocking to those. Lots of cool stuff was introduced this last patch but all of it is in strongboxes, with a ridiculously low drop rate on the items and some frankly insulting items dropping instead. 100% of players in the game have the dropsuit command skillbook, new players actually start out with it preinstalled - but it drops in a strongbox, and nobody has any use for it. The only method of accessing strongboxes is through keys. Getting anywhere near enough keys to unlock your strongboxes is madness unless you buy AUR. Many players are passing 2,000 strongboxes but have only acquired half a dozen or so keys through normal play.
It's poor implementation, lack of content, and overmonetisation that have gotten people upset.

This would be fine, but that money is not going into actual new content.
So far we have have had:
Loyalty ranks Daily missions Strongboxes Warbarges RNG BPOs APEX BPOs
All of these have a heavy focus on monetisation, but don't add anything to actual gameplay.
The only actual gameplay features that have been added are some new maps - all of which have actually been finished for a year or so, just not implemented.
There simply haven't been any content updates, despite massive monetisation.
The Warlords patch has been nicknamed 'AURlords' because it's completely focused on AUR. The only non-AUR feature is the one map, which as mentioned was already designed previously. The warbarge feature is ludicrously focused on AUR, to the point where it takes years and years (and let's face it, DUST doesn't have this lifespan) to max it out, or alternatively you can spend in excess of 400k AUR to actually get the stuff.

Yes, APEX BPOs are also an example. I added them to the list. I've probably missed a couple of things.
Going from Uprising to Warlords, I had hoped for a really solid update that would show how far we've come and that the dev team has brought together all its resources to bring out a great update. But it simply hasn't happened. There is no new content in it. Every other 1.0 patch has brought masses of new content - Uprising, for all of its flaws, brought an impressive amount of kit to the table. Chromosome brought loads of cool kit in, too. Reduced dev team or not, it's a very poor (or rich, depending on your viewpoint) expansion in comparison.
EDIT: Yes, added a few more things to the list.

How long have you been away?
Nothing new has been added since Uprising 1.8, and that was a year ago.

The maps were pretty cool and are probably the best part of the last three patches, but as I said they were designed over a year ago.
It's a shame.
