Can you define realistic because i played some fking quality ww2 planes like screming demons over europe where if you pitched too hard at certain speeds then your wings would rip off, you'd black out for a sec, you could shoot bits of the planes and stuff as well and was in general fking quality back in the day.
When i played war thunder it was a seriously arcady arena type game i thought but with planes and just really bland and shtty with nothing special to it. It was more beneficial to fly in third person which ruined it for me, any decent plane game has cockpit as the preferred view as it's where all the actual info is at.
There was no actual reason not to fly in third person in that game as you got the crosshairs and much better view altogether. I have not tried it for maybe a year though.
Arcade and Realistic aren't friendly to those who like using throttle sticks and cockpit view. Mouse aim is insanely accurate at range and third person gives more visibility.
However, in Sim mode, both of those are removed, and the plane behaves realistically. You can't just put your nose up and climb like in arcade, or any other silly crazy stuff.
In Sim mode, you are locked in the cockpit and must control your plane. Enabling combat flaps at 400km/h will result in parts of your plane flying off. Pulling to hard a maneuver going to fast will either A.) Send you into an unrecoverable spin or B.) Have parts of your plane fly off. You will have to respect other planes strengths. No Zero in their right mind would climb after an FW with energy advantage, and a P-40 is going to climb instead of trying to scissor with a Spitfire.
Damage is realistic. If your right wing is torn to shreds and you lost tail control, you might as well bail. Engine fire will kill you unless you act fast and cut the throttle back to zero in time to suffocate the flame.
All hud elements are removed. You can't see your enemies short of visuals, and you don't know whos friendly without comms. Stay sharp and always check your 6. You also won't have idiots shooting at 700m anymore, as you have limited ammo and no lead indicator.
Oh, and pulling too many G's will cause you to black out. When flying Jets, it could even knock you unconscious. Gotta know what you can handle
Overall, Arcade is silly and fun, but Simulated is where its at. It's no Cliffs of Dover, but its pretty damn close.
