I was optimistic about this idea when I heard about it. More stuff to play with, some small passives to help you out, and even though the +5% damage sounded a little sketchy I was still liking the idea. I logged in the first day to look at it, found out everything started on a cooldown, and played a few games. When I looked back at it, the first thing had come off cooldown, the component producer or whatever it is called. I upgraded it, played a few more games, checked the cooldown on the warbarge itself, then logged off.
Next time I log on is today. I go to claim my components, then check the warbarge.
1,119 components to upgrade. I blink my eyes a few times and do a double take. Yep, it sure does cost 1,119 components to get your second upgrade in this entire warbarge mechanic.
You know, when I saw people here comparing this new system to phone games, I thought it was a pretty spot on comparison, but I didn't think much more of it. This is worse, this is, I might go as far to say, disgusting. At 200 components a day, it would take at least 6 godamn days to get your second upgrade. Your second upgrade. For those of you who haven't played Clash of Clans or something similar, they don't start springing ridiculously long wait times like 6 days until about your 100th upgrade.
And that's not even the worst of it. It would take 6 days AT LEAST. If you're like me, and you only log in once or twice a week, due to the cap on the amount of components that can be held (400, at this level) the SECOND upgrade in this entire system could potentially take WEEKS. From what the game has told me, upgrading the warbarge doesn't give you any kind of passive, either. It just unlocks the ability for me to be able to upgrade my component producer another time, and gives me a single new thing.
So let me sum that up: It will take me weeks to buy an upgrade, that does nothing more than give me the authority to buy other upgrades that might actually help me. How much will those upgrades cost? Months?
But wait,
You can buy components with AURUM, we are all saved! You can reduce those wait times to nothing if you just throw money at it. And you know what? I would be ok with that, if the F2P version wasn't so grossly weak in comparison. Two months from now, when I've finally gotten enough components to purchase +1% damage to my weapons, I will have spent the previous two months getting outperformed by people who purchased +5% damage on the first day. I'll go ahead and repeat myself here: that is disgusting. This was the only actually exciting thing brought with Warlords 1.0, I sure hope we actually get something worthwhile in 1.1.
