Players hate them when they are attached in any way to the loot table.
Let me cite Destiny as an example: Everything is RNG. What's the biggest issue most players have with Destiny besides the absent storyline?
The dependence upon RNG for everything.
Right now the strongboxes are RNG, which I can see, kinda as you have no way of knowing what's in it. However there's really very little of value comparatively in that RNG table for an individual player.
I need a buncha STD aurum precision enhancers like I need a hole in the head.
But now we have the experimental lab. Instead of you manufacturing weapons you want? It tosses the dice and assigns you a weapon completely at random. How is this worth the time and effort of investing into it?
Especially when it doesn't even inform you of what you have won.
My honest opinion is that wherever possible in the loot table that RNG needs to be lessened or at least the more valueless items excised from the table entirely.
The lockboxes aren't fun, they don't feel valuable and the experimental lab isn't something I'm looking forward to dumping components into.

Just curious, but would people be happier if there were different types of strongboxes? Weapon's cases, dropsuit cases, module boxes, and equipment boxes?
At least then you have some agency over the contents of the box.

You see, THIS could be much more useful overall.
I'd destroy the module boxes.
But this still doesn't solve the lack of "feeling of value" that the strongboxes should have.

If we increase the chances of obtaining proto (or better) gear from the strongboxes then we are moving Dust 514 closer to a full blown P2W system. The best thing we can do is increase the availability of keys. More keys means more opportunities to get something decent.
Imagine if you could passively generate 10 keys per day without spending aurum. If you opened a shitbox would you be upset? I wouldn't, the key was free after all. I'll try again tomorrow or whatever.

What I would like to see is the ability to sell back AUR gear for a % of it's value. At least this way if I can junk I can get a partial reroll. It would also let players slowly be able to earn premium currency, which is present in most successful F2P games.

+1's to Dictating our Weapons Factory products, Keys being made more common and AUR item salvage being salable for AUR instead of ISK to further AUR holdings (and inspiring more AUR use ) by the playerbase.

Production Factory should feel like a factory, not a slot machine.
Honestly I don't have an issue with RNG if its used sparingly and in the right places. Officer stuff randomly dropping at end of battle? Totally fine with that. My factory randomly producing something I probably dont want? Not so fine with that.
As for strong boxes, it would be a little more palatable if I knew at least what tier of item was inside. At least then people would know about how much the contents would be worth before spending a key on it.

I would love it if Dust had the CS GO case opening style of strongboxes.
"I almost got 50x officer gk.0s they were right there!!! Now all I have is militia grenades..."
But then they'd get Sony sued. And the players would rage even harder than one could think possible...

I haven't even got enough components to upgrade my Warbarge once yet (I'm not paying Aurum for them) but the Weapons Lab would let you select the type of weapon you want to produce and then the system pumps one out. The higher the level, the better the chance of getting higher end gear.
