I have been having this dilemma for quite a bit now. Saving up on sp to actually spec into one of these. I have always used SMG's as a sidearm since closed beta... I don't know how I feel about using something different for a change. Everytime I use my Minmatar Assault Apex suit with flay locks as side arm, it messes me up thinking that it's SMG's lol
I am mostly an aggressive slayer when playing minmatar assault and Gal Sent, more to the passive when using my Gal assault. I like to get in on the action. I am wondering which would benefit me better... the Bolt, or Flaylocks? Everntually I'll spec into both sometime but I need to focus on one.
Any thoughts?

Honestly there is no other side arm to use other than the SMG. This is a side arm that you can also use as a primary. In a fight , you will more often then not find your opponent has a SMG . I would MAX the SMG out including level 5 pro.
Maybe you can justify specing into a blueprint side arm but its a waste of points, go for your cores an then MAX out what you play with 90% of the time . |

Both are good.
The Flaylock is less effective in practice since you have to have a height advantage and it will be less effective against heavy suits who have a resistance to explosives. In theory it doesn't matter as long as you are accurate and directly hit all your targets.
I prefer the Flaylock for classes where I need to rely on a sidearm, but on classes that I don't I tend to use the Flaylock because it comes in handy against suits who have low health and also groups of enemies.

My smg's are maxed out already :) It's my only sidearm I am specced into which is why I want to move on to something else for whiz and giggles!

Yeah these are my two main sidearms, I alternate between the two. The flaylock is the most fun but I usually pick what will be best for the map im playing on. Height is def a plus for the flaylock, and if you have good aim(which you do) run the bolt pistol.

I like both, but I'd probably give it to the bolt pistol:
Better range, better damage profile (shield and heaves resist explosive damage a lot more than rail drawbacks), more accuracy/reliable shots.
Bolt pistol is nice for finishing off people really quick and flaylock can take out armor scouts really easily.
Other than that they're pretty similar, couldn't go wrong getting and playing with both, though I see the flaylock as more of a novelty.

I use the ARR and Bolt Pistol. I think they compliment each other really effectively. Bolt Pistol is really good as an assassination weapon to where it does so much damage and fires so few rounds that the target can often not really be aware they are taking damage before they are dead. It also has a Headshot bonus so sneaking up on people, even at 15+ meters can instantly kill them. Works well with a Scout playstyle.
Flaylock, though I have not used it in a long while, doesn't seem reliable enough to me to have as a sidearm. If you are digging for your sidearm, your primary has failed you and you want something reliable. SMG and Bolt Pistol are ones I can rely on.

Novelty? Pfft, the flaylock is freaking awesome...in the right hands. Its hard to master, especially on flat ground. It shines in "fish in a barrel" situations. Knowing when and how to use it, and how to create those situations is key. Must spec it to see the potential. Use this on your assault.
Bolt pistol is amazing even with no points specced. Use this on your Sentinel. It's arguable the best sidearm for a heavy since its range and presicion complement the weaknesses of the HMG. Dont waste your skill points, get Bolt1, and enjoy massive damage, hella range, and the most OP tracking in the game. I once ohk a medium at 60m with a single wild hipfire shot....with militia version.

The hand held rocket launcher is very fun. I'd love to skill it up, but I'm invested into the SMG and have other priorities for a while. Saxonmish made a pretty fun Flaylock vid that really highlights the effectiveness of splash damage- http://youtu.be/2bDGr50yx6o |

I look at weapons selection in two ways.
#1 Can i use the darn thing. The flayloc pistol is NOT my friend. I heard is agreat wepon but, I simply can't use it. So that is an easy choice for me. You have to evaluate how useful it is to you and if you can use it well.
#2 is does it compliment my main weapon. For example I favor the combat rifle. The combat rifle is an anti armor weapon with +15 damage bonus to armor BUUTTT!! a -15% to shields. Terefore when I go up against a caldari or minmatar (and many scouts for that mattter) I prefer to start the fight with the ion pistol. This way I can reduce their shields quickly and then finish them off with the combat rifle. Another combo that has work for me is the shotgun with the bolt pistol. Why? It complements range. At short range I use the shotgun. At long range I use the bolt pistol. It gives you more coverage.
A combo that doesn't work well for me is a shotgun with nova knifes because i don't really gain all that much with them. The shotgun is so short range that I might as well bypass the knifes. In that case a longer range rifle goes better with the knifes. I also like the ion pistol or any pistol with the knife because if you miss your target with the knife or they back pedal out of range you can always touch them with your pistol.
Anyways, complement your weapons to either compliment ranges or damage type. |

As said before, use a complementary sidearm.
Flaylock works for me because PLC. IoP is also pretty good ATM, but the Bolt is one of the best pistols.
But if you're going for giggles, Flaylock is good.

I just started speccing the flaylock (used only smig since beta too.) Its a fun weapon now that it isnt crazy OP, and goes great with my ScR. Ive also been a MD user since beta, so its like a pocket MD to me.
The bolt pistol seems a little OP, and is no where near as exciting to use. That said, it is great for pocket sniping when you just cant get the range with an AR or whatever. I use a mlt variant when I pull out my frontline suit. I have 0 skills in it and it still eats half the HP of a heavy.
I would say go with the flaylock, because its most like the smg in terms of range and damage profile, but that may also be a good reason to try something different and go with the bolt pistol.

What Lunna McDuffing said is absolutely true. Pick the weapon that compliment your primary one in the best way. I think the AR/SMG fit is amazing and in general anti-shield primary/anti armor sidearm are the best way to go. A commando fit with ScR/CR is deadly.
Now, between flaylock and BoP, I'd say that it all depends on what you want to do with them. Do you want a funny gun, with unique gameplay (even if hit detection sucks on it) which throws small rockets? Go flaylock. If you want a more reliable weapon, that you could use efficiently at a decent range, a deals huge damages, go BoP.
Hope it helped^^

I love the flaylocks. When people who don't use the forums get killed by one, they're like Whaaaaaaaat that's the worst pistol in the game
It was especially funny this one time when I was doing Min FW I ran Militia only to not lose ISK that much and I had a SG fit with flaylocks A proto logi with a six kin was camping an objective, and I killed him with a militia flaylock
It was great to see a proto probably 350k ISK fit fly through the air with

A lot of good input here. It's almost like it's a tie! haha. I am more into the competitive side of things so I will need to rely on my side arm if needed.
Is Proto Bolt pistol with it? I keep reading how militia and basic bolt pistol is enough...

You have a good armor sidearm, so I would suggest a shield one. Personally, I am fond of the breach scrambler pistol. You might give it a try. |

The performance of the basic Bolt Pistol is very satisfactory, especially for the price. Consider the ISK savings of having a basic level sidearm and the fitting cost reduction as well. For the record, I prefer the Breach ScP and Breach SMG to either the Flaylock or Bolt Pistol.

I only use a flaylock if i have a strong anti shield weapon... Other than the laser (Laser + Flay is a bad combo imho), it's the cannon.
I fire the plasma cannon at my enemy. Usually, they survive the splash (damn armor tanked suits) so, i whip out the flay and continue bombing a small area.
So, depends on your fit and playstyle. Make your weapons compliment each other and/or capitalize on the skill bonuses for your suit.
E.G: - Rail n bolt on a Cal assault, or combat + smg on a Min assault. - Laser + Magsec/SMG, Plasma + Flay

Flaylock is beastly if you speed tank. You can run and jump all around someone and put a few flay lock rounds into their armor, and they die.
