There should be an alternate market with them where you can use some kind of token to purchase them. This token would then be placed in to strong boxes.
Why would I want to "get lucky" and score a BPO of a race that I am not skilled into at all?
Also, putting better stuff into strongboxes does not make them any less of a junk box than they are. To be totally honest I do not expect to ever see one of these BPOs. |

Actually the same could be done with officer weapons as well. |

Baal Omniscient wrote:For non-OP BPO's? Sure. For over the top officer gear? .....I think that's best left to random chance as it has been thus far. Even if the BPO's were just put into the LP store and the strong boxes just gave out huge chunks of LP, a 1 in 4 chance of getting LP for the race you want is far better than a 1-in-however-many-BPO's-are-available chance of getting the item you want.
The problem with officer weapons is the fact that even if you get a set there is a good chance they are useless to you. This significantly drops the appeal.
Lets say the average low to mid level player has 2 weapons at proficiency 3. Assuming the chance of officer weapons is around 1 in 50. That new players chance of getting an officer weapon that is useful to him now becomes somewhere in the area of 1 in 500. Sorry if these numbers are way off, I did not feel like counting up the officer weapons and just wanted to give an example as to why the current system is only hurting CCPs chance of sales. |

Would you play the lottery if instead of paying out 1 million USD it paid out 1 million AUD and you could not exchange it ?
This is exactly what buying keys is. You may "win big" but get absolutely nothing out of it. The original idea of random salvage was meant to go along with a player market so that players could make a decision on which weapon they ultimately ended up with through selling the one they get and buying the one they want. |

Baal Omniscient wrote: Third, I feel that any chance of getting officer gear should be earned, not bought, not handed out at random; whether through salvage, strongboxes or otherwise. A challenge system for earning them needs to be implemented, random chance is a disappointing byproduct of a lack of imagination in game design.
This absolutely could not have been stated any better.

Player trading has been moved to Q2 meaning we have a couple of months before we see it. Player trading does not fix the crackpot system that as Baal stated is no more than a lack of imagination.
@Timtron Victory
I really wish I would have thought about that at the time. Would have made the example much nicer.

After thinking about it a bit more I have this idea.
Every victory you earn officer commendation medals. Strong boxes have the possibility of giving out large sums of these same medals.
Officer weapons cost X amount of commendation medals.
Simple, easy, and straight to the point while keeping some random chance as well as being able to earn them through accomplishments. |

I think like casinos and the lottery CCP should have to disclose your odds of winning. |
