Take a look at Warframe for instance. You can totally get some different helmets through playing the game but to my knowledge there's no way to obtain animation sets, color palettes (to color your suit), or different texture patterns through in-game play. It's all monetization based. There's no real 'gamble' at it, the players aren't throwing in $10 to -MAYBE- get what they want among a whole host of other options like we do with the Strongboxes.
Every warframe comes with 2 animation sets default to them. They also have bad value considering you cannot preview these things on how they may look on your warframe that isnt the original owner of it.
Various Color pallets and skin textures of varying degrees are offered throughout the year for a low price of 1k credits or even given for free as a thank you. Also can be considered bad value because you have no idea how they may look on your warframe.
Armor bits and scarfs can be obtained from the Void Trader how well you can farm is all a gamble though worse so than other games RNG though. Also you have no idea how they may look on your warframe.
Sigils are a means of customizing your war-frames chest and back emblems are obtainable via syndicates. You can get other kinds of sigils for amazing feats and luck. (Stalker's) Oddly enough the ONLY thing I noted so far that gives you a preview of what it may look like. Also there is no buy-able sigils aside from the founders pack.
Badges are a means of adorning your shoulders of accomplishments; only one badge is sold for premium currency and that would be your clan's own badge. Rest has to be earned.
Platinum is trade-able thus in theory all cosmetics can be eventually obtained. However the things people are willing to pay for and the chances of you getting said items are very RNG like probably worse-so than the crates and even more so the market shifts often so by the time you finally get that one thing; people wont be buying it anymore. Based on the current trade times it may take you 150+ traded items just to get some basic cosmetics and of course there is the work effort in making the trade item appealing like modding a card to full energy; a 1000 core and 2,000,000 credit effort at times.
Worst offering from DE? 5 card pack for real money; RNG generally gives you the worst/most worthless cards in the game.
