I downloaded planetside 2 for ps4 tonight and played the closed beta for about an hour and a half.
Even with hundreds of other simultaneous players on my screen, I didn't detect any signs of lag whatsoever. Gameplay is so smooth, without any rubber banding, slow down or low fps.
Why, in Dust, with a maximum of 32 people in a match do we encounter so many lag-related problems?
CCP, please consult with Sony Online Entertainment concerning your network and server configuration. If Dust 514 is your beta test for legion, then please, by all means necessary, learn to optimize your network/servers. Legion simply won't compete if players continue to experience huge lag, while other games offer seamless gameplay.
Dust has something special. Please help your cause and boost server performance. |

There's superior processing on the PS4, like GPU accelleration available to the client, yes. However, object location broadcasting comes from the game servers. |

The PS3 is capable of processing graphics. It is a superior 7th generation console. The lag is a server-client architecture issue. I am begging CCP to consult with SOE and find out what is wrong with the CCP network/server config.
That is all.
Optimizing our playing conditions is an improvement for all and should be supported by the community.

In all honesty CCP doesn't do too bad of a job networking those players together with playable latency.. Sure it can get bad at times (usually on an individual basis) but that's been the norm for years with online games..
Where CCP absolutely fails at (and where I think people get confused) is frame rate lag.. Especially in comparison to older generation games on the ps3 that could handle larger player count and arguably better graphics..
But to compare a shooter on a next gen system (PS4, Xbone or PC) to a PS3 shooter is pretty ridiculous especially considering the massive differences in specifications...
Now if Dust/Legion was to release on PS4 or PC and we still have these issues then we got problems..
Why anybody would argue against trying to improve server/client performance is beyond me. It just goes to show you that for any position in this community, someone will always have an opposing view.
My comparison between planetside 2 and dust is appropriate. Yes they run on different client machines, however:
1. I am using the same ISP connection for both games. 2. Planetside 2 has many times more objects with locational data being piped across the network, so A.) there is more data being broadcasted to the player base, and B.) there are more players to whom that data is being broadcasted. Broadcasting game-state data is specifically a server function. Reporting user actions is a client-side function and should be directly reflected in game state. The game state can be broadcasted at a regular interval regardless of client action reporting frequency. In other words, the game goes on regardless of a specific user's network latency. 3. CCP never play tests their changes, so we can assume that they never load tested their servers before putting them into production. 4. The perception of whether or not the amount of lag is acceptable is up to each player to decide. Judging from the amount of lag complaints, CCP is not keeping the player base happy concerning server performance. |
