Heavy - Tank. Nuff said, high HP, high dps at close range Logi - Healer, does exactly what it says on the tin, less damage more healing Assault - DPS those long range rangers, maybe some form of AoE (other than the mass driver) Scout - That annoying rougue. Should do less damage but inflict status effects like poison, increased hit-box, slow movement
Just something i was thinking about while playing WoW, not really serious but could work ^.^

the thing is, is that even at close range an assualt can out dps a heavy, if you jump in close enough without damaging the heavy at long range first then your loss. its the same as letting a scout get behind you or walking into a remote in the middle of the road.
the reason the heavy needs to have high dps at close range is that all it takes is one clip to take out a heavy. in my opinion that is not tanking, as a tank is meant to be able to sit through several enemies fighting it. which even if it has one or two logis it cant do effectivly without the tank needing to duck behind cover.
it is hard to put an honest tank in this kind of game though, its not WoW or dota2, hence some form of balance in regards to dps is needed. a proper tank in an fps would break this game.
but its not to say heavys are unbeatable, strafe, take cover, hit from distance while applying constant dps while closing in if needed. there are only certain maps where heavys are formidable. out in the open the heavy is like a rather large duck crossing the road, harmless almost. it is why there is a mixture of open and closed objectives so each role can hold an objective.
the probalem with the heavy argument is the same as the tanker one, everyone thinks they should be able to solo everything, disregard squad play entirely. "wish i could melee the mcc to death, that would be awesome". yes heavys are soloable if done correctly the same as a tank, but there should be that element of needing another person to help. now some are going to say, tanks should be the same, and to be fair, if the cost of the vehicle was spread between the squad (called in as a squad, maybe a squad lead function or something), so the loss is not pinned on one person then that would be fair. but the loss is covered by one person, a tank with no weapon waiiting for someone to jump in is useless. again it is soloable in the right situations, but the element of squad play comes back in. the word is tank, it tanks damage, not unbeatable but certainly formiddable.
realised i didnt add the commando role, which is essentially a more heavily armoured assault still fitting in the dps slot.
sorry for the ramble, just woke up -_- time for coffee
