I realize it may take some practice, but it seems really difficult to get kills. The aiming mechanics are so weird. I usually can't stall long enough to lock onto my target. Any advice?

The best advice I can give you is to find a friend willing to be your gunner and protect you from AV. Well that, and remember that the guns the AVers have are supposed to kill you and will do so if you stay too long.

Ok, but are there any tricks to the trade as far as aiming goes? To be honest, I feel a little challenged when shooting. I usually end up drifting into walls and loosing half of my HP.

Well that, and remember that the guns the AVers have are supposed to kill you and will do so if you stay too long. This is extremely bad advice, since only the best pilots with good gunners can make this work to any degree. If youre still learning the basics, do NOT fit a side gun. Are you using missiles? This is the only anti infantry front gun, and its strongly recommended to go python if you intend to be killing infantry. This is mostly thanks to shields helping you survive lol swarms as you try to escape. Be sure to fit an afterburner for this.
As for keeping on the target, the key is to come down to a height where they show up on passive scans. Cut all thrust and hover there. Tilt forward or backwards as needed, remembering that you will slowly move in either direction if you hold it, and just pivot. This keeps you stable while you drag your reticle across the enemy, and fire. Simple side to side motions are your best bet in most cases, firing when you feel / see them beneath you.
If you hear or see AV, run. If you take damage, run. Only use your afterburner for this reason. Its not the single swarmer shooting you that youre worried about (so long as you run) , its the other 2-4 av players also looking for you, so you have to be sure to break away at the tiniest hint of AV, lest you get shot down during your retreat. As a new or newer pilot, under no circumstances should you trt to slug it out. Always retreat.

Practice. Other than that you will notice that if you swing around to shoot, the turret will hit behind the actual reticule in the direction you are moving. I.e. If you swing around to the left and shoot, then you will hit to the right of the reticule.
Also, you usually should be shooting as you are swinging around to slow and aim at a position to keep up momentum and be ready to evade. Don't try to get used to stopping and hover. Learn to fire while strafing.
Also, learn to swoop in past where you want to fire, yaw 180-¦ and then slide in a tight circle to keep aim on a target.
Sliding means you roll one way but yaw in the opposite direction so that you are essentially flying sideways and can pivot around a point to control aim.
Otherwise, when hovering tilt down and fire then let your nose float up, then tilt down again.
DO NOT USE BLASTERS FOR KILLS! There is a hit detection problem. I trained them all the way up and I still don't register but maybe one shot while firing at targets 5m or less.
More important than anything is to first practice evasive maneuvering. Go in with a cheap DS and get shot at on purpose. Use roll mainly and shoot to one side since your thrusters are always more or less pointing down. Then use yaw to trim your turns tighter.

First lesson of all vehicle pilots: understand that Atiim thinks he knows what he's talking about, but actually doesnt?. Second lesson: ignore most of his advice and just practice.
