As much as I like to get involved in video games, there are some persistent factors that keep me tied to reality. I love getting lost in RPG's and MMO's etc. but these particular exploits keep me from going b*lls deep in our virtual fantasies.
1. Glitches. 2. Boosting. 3. Graphics. 4. Unlimited lives.
If we could remove glitches, games would seem more real. If we could stop boosting, the grind would have been real. If we could greatly enhance graphics, again...games would appear as if they were alternate universes. If we could make lives/spawns less available, the assertion/concentration levels would mess with our brains to the point that we would get sweaty palms and beads rolling down our foreheads to the point that we actually believe we are fighting for our lives. If we could adjust all of these issues, then we would literally be living in a dream world.

1. Glitches are impossible to completely eradicate. As soon as you fix one glitch, another one is created. It's a simple fact that every programmer has to live with.
2. As is active/passive boosters? No way. We need them. Besides, they're CCP's primary money maker.
3. No comment.
4. We're immortal mercenaries in New Eden. Think about that for a moment.

Seriously? You want to turn dust into some cheap counter strike GO ripoff? I don't think so.

I'm gathering that Burns wasn't really referring to Dust.
I've had some really good experiences with a few games where I felt fully immersed.
Skyrim was full of immersive moments.
Project Zomboid, despite it's graphical limitations was ridiculously immersive.
A far as Skyrim goes, the limitations were yours to make. Turning off quicksaves and only saving when you slept in a bed were good ways to make it feel deeper.

Yeah, I've been ignoring the fact that a lot of people boost in video games lately. It usually spikes during the release of new gaming engines/systems. This causes an abundance of ps3's floating around at cheap prices. All anyone needs to do is spend $50 on a used ps3 and have two TV's, then sync into whatever gameplay and boost. It's the worst slap in the face for us "try-hards". You spend all this time getting good and gaining reputation, then you hop on the leaderboards and realize Joe Blow has a 2,000kdr and 5,000wlr. lol. Then your all like, "I just wasted my time, where's the razor blade." lol. Nah, but you get what I'm saying.

Except that CS:GO is a good game that people actually can and want to play competitively......

1) Agreed to an extent. Sometimes they are fun (see the EA Madden one foot tall linebacker glitch), but the more complex games get, and they are increasingly getting complex, the more room there is for errors.
Certain egregious errors certainly must never exist, but I think if we are to be reasonable, we need to expect a certain number of small glitches in games.
2) I agree, but again, its impossible to create a system that is perfectly unexploitable.
3) I don't think I agree with this one. Some of the best games have never been graphically amazing (see Tetris). I would say frame rate has more to do with immersion than does level of graphics.
4) I think it depends on the game for the lives. Some games are fun because of the story and not the challenge. I like how some games, like Dark Souls, builds in many deaths and requires you to learn about things through death in order to overcome them.

Thank God for this. You really want to lose your grip on reality that much? Calling Bruce Willis!

the only game i've been able to get immersed in lately is the turn based XCOMs... a good example of my immersion being totally ****** over was with Fallout 3.. i was super immersed in the story and universe until i reached a save point that was corrupt.. i hadn't even died once but had to do like a 15 hour backload to a previous save.. after that i just started eradicating all life that could be killed and no longer cared about the story that was ruined for me.. Bethesda tho is kinda fail with their NPCs- i can kill some guys wife and he's not even coded to care about that.. same with skyrim..
