I've been running around in my commando g1, with bpo ar and bpo shotgun, not to save money, but just cuz.
-standard weapons with level 5 commando are equivalent to proto weapons on any other suit >:)

Running proto is almost always done at a loss, however it is done because it's *fun*.
If you're sitting on a few million isk and playing with a decent squad, the amount that you actually lose when running proto goes down drastically. You can run BPO's / Basic / Advance gear when playing solo, or not trying too hard... and then pull proto out when you actually want to use it (and are in squads that support it).
One of my characters is still sitting on 100+ proto suits from when I spent about 50m and bought something like 400-500 proto suits *months* ago.

Not a protostomper, but to run proto I dropship. Believe it or not you can go isk positive running a standard DS with mCRU and scanner while helping team and being cautious. Drop some links on rooftops for extra points.

Have you ever built a proto suit?
They're seventy-five times as expensive as a solid militia-gear build.
They're ten times as expensive as a solid standard-gear buld
They're fivee times as expensive as a solid advanced-gear build.
Yet, unless you HP tank them with massive shields/armor, they die just as quickly as any above.
What makes proto stompers so powerful is not their gear. It's that they run in squads who keep their group tight, within about 25 meters of each other. This allows them to rotate in and out quickly if one is low on HP. The injured soldier can fall back while the others move to the front and act as a shield. They can pick each other up. They can all focus their attack on a single soldier who just spawned out of a CRU. They can all focus their attack on a single soldier left to defend an objective. They all focus on a single solder, and when they do, he drops in under a second.
If you want to stomp, you can do it in militia gear:
1. Find a group of people you can play with every day for 8 hours in a row.
2. Always stay within 25 meters of each other in battle.
3. When you get hurt, move behind those who are not hurt and let them take some damage as they finish off the enemy.
4. Pick each other up.
5. Use comms so that you can call out which soldier you will all focus your attack on.
6. Have someone run scans.
7. Have a knifer or puncher to run up in people's faces. (optional but trendy)
There is synergy in a group. That is the power; not the meta level of the weapons/armor. |

Couple different ways:
1. Not actually being ISK positive. My prototype suits run at over 100k so if I die just twice in a match I lose out. However, I also have 50 million isk so if I am losing 200k a match I have 250 matches before I run out. Those that have hundreds of millions extend it even further.
2. Not always using Prototype. Only some matches will someone use Prototype gear and others just stick with Basic/Advanced. It is like a cheat day on a diet.
3. Getting an absurd amount of money. You can die spend 400k a match if you are getting 400k a match.
4. Not dying. You can use suits that cost 300k forever if you never, ever die.
5. Being efficient. You can make a prototype suit 110k that is more isk efficient than a 220k suit so you end up saving despite "prototype suits are 180k+"
It is usually a mix of the above. 1 + 4 + 5 is how I have been able to restock my prototype suits to 100 and by the time I needed to restock, I had slightly more money than when I bought them to 100. I use fits that are not the top end of price but at still ultra effective like using an advanced weapon rather than prototype weapon and trying to only die 1-4 times between two matches so that my "number of matches before bankrupt" increases sharply.
For me, I was using basic suits for the longest time. Each suit cost less than 20k as I found myself saving to a large amount of money (for me). Eventually, I realized that I was nearly ISK positive so it didn't matter what I ran because it would take longer to become destitute than my interest will be held with the game. I started with 45 million several months ago when I went with my "use prototype gear" shtick. After several months, I am at 48 million. I basically have no reason not to use prototype suits given my SP and ISK.

If you're not on that level yet, then play in cheap suits.
And it's not about running in squads as they say. It's about how you play.
If you're more than good, you won't lose isk using proto.
If you're not good enough, you won't run in proto without losing isk.

Budgeting.
DUST is a giant game of learning how to budget for your aspirations.
At first it wasn't cost effective to run Proto-tybe gear much without taking ISK losses but learning how to survive in STD and ADV equipment makes you more efficient at it along with skill acquired over time in the game.
You figure out what your average death is per match and budget your suits around making profit. For some they can only do this in STD and ADV gear... Or be forced to run BPO's.
For others they still make a profit running proto.
I really don;t care about ISK... haven't for years.. it just keeps building up... I Have had matches where i have lost a couple million in Proto suits... then have 6 matches i won't take a loss and usually land in top position for the team and get high payouts.
I Feel these days i take more losses cuz i really don't care about the results anymore aslong as i have fun... And my wallet still keeps gaining ISK faster then i can spend it... And i frequently give friends 10 mil so i don't have to hear them complain about being broke.
Budgeting just becomes second nature. |

I run adv gear mostly so I'm not burning through my wallet but i have enough proto suits in Stock to spam proto for months ..

Currently at 330 billion isk.
Then when a map pops i like to play,
I go all out with best proto fit.
Have many different types of fits to use for the right maps.
I have some fits like this for example.

Hi-AV
You get the idea, this way you dont waste 2 million isk on a losing battle.
You can use the more practical fit for the map you are on.
I recommend sticking to advanced gear or lower until you have 20 million isk minimum.
It really sucks having anything lower since a stack of 100 proto can cost 5 million or more. |

You didn't get 330 billion running ambush. It would take constantly running ambush matches for over 32 YEARS straight, without a break, to earn that much.
(My calculations: Ambush match, 8 minutes, ambush payout: 155,000 isk. 330,000,000,000 isk / 155,000 isk per match = 2129032.258064516 matches 2129032.258064516 matches * 8 minutes per match = 17032258.06451613 minutes / 60 minutes per hour = 283870.9677419355 hours / 24 hours per day = 11827.95698924731 days / 365 days per year = 32.4053616143762 years / 10 years per decade = 3.2 decades)

That aside, I make my ISK by playing in PC and destroying vehicles in PUBs. Killing 5 HAVs (or even better, ADSs) will typically net you a payout of 400k.
