This weekend I will be buying what I hope to be my last PS3. It will be for the sole purpose of playing dust. Which one is the best one to by? Which one runs dust best? Here's why I ask.
I found myself reading a developer spotlight featuring CCP Patriot where he states:
"All these elements increase the difficulty of production on the PS3. Eventually due to memory limitations that the hardware itself presents, we simply have to make some compromises. Now, that doesnGÇÖt mean that every console will perform the same either. Our game will run the best on the latest model of PS3, but we keep optimizing also for the older models that may still see some performance differences. No matter the console, though, we keep optimizing and testing on all of these machines equally in order to give our players the best New Eden FPS experience that we can on PS3. That probably is one of our constant challenges while working on DUST 514."
My experiences with the PS3 I have purchased are as follows:
Super slim: Worst overall performance. Constant hit-detection problems, constant frame-rate stutters, 900 HP's near instantly depleting. Death animation before # or health bars went to 0.
PS3 Slim: I honestly hadn't spent much time with this one. Returned it due to the fans kicking into instant OMGIMHAWT mode literally every-time I entered a battle.
PS3 Fat: LESS LAG WHEN FIGHTING 1v1s. Easily the best performance overall. This doesn't mean good. If I compare it to what I see in this video I would swear Yo is playing on a PC. Nowhere near that smooth with all those effects happening on screen. His game even seems to stutter when he first spawns then it irons itself out.
I've always heard that the PS3 slim has the "best" processor, is this right? I've controlled all of the variables over the last month. Same model SSD used on all PS3's. Shown improvement. But not enough in how gameplay runs. Same internet. Same battle servers. Same TV with the same TV settings.
So help me out here guys, before I just call it quits. My first experience with Dust was with Super slim, which was just plain awful.
Which PS3 do you have and how is your gameplay compared to the video I referenced? If it's similar can you post your rig?
Also, smart people: Not all PS3's are equal, right? Is there a certain model I should be looking for? A certain "batch" that acts as the sweet spot for Dust? I will give 100 million isk to someone who leads me to the right model.

*tired thought: I was just playing a game where I was unloading my SMG into an amarr assault who was moving in the same direction as myself. My screen didn't have crosshairs and no lines indicating I was hitting him, as soon as I started engaging him. His life bars popped up above head for a split second about half way through and it showed less than half health before they disappeared. I ended up getting the +50 and his clone fell to the ground. With no way of me telling I was actually hitting him.*
This type of stuff happens constantly. Almost like the PS3 is having a hard time "processing" everything that's going on when I engage others.
My internet speed is 28mbs down and 6.3mbs up.

I have owned 3 different PS3s and played Dust 514 on all of them.
My first 60 GB PS3 (Model CECHCxx "Fat PS3") ran Dust the best of all. Better overall fps and gameplay experience. I hear that if you mount a SSD in one of those, then you get a visible performance difference. Mine eventually died, so I bought the next 2 models. Even without the SSD, it was a sweet system.
I also own a slim and super slim with SSD. I continue to get uber laggy low fps performance with those two machines. |

Go with a PS3 fat. It's cheaper and you won't notice a performance difference.
Buy a SSD if you are playing planetary conquest, since running in and getting links and that first hack are only important in PC. If not, don't. It makes no sense to load in before everyone else in a pub match.
SSDs are getting cheaper everyday and the fat PS3s are pretty easy to get a hold of and normally a lot cheaper than the slim and superslim models.
My PS3 works great, and I never have DC or lag problems that aren't universal to everyone at the time i.e. mass DCs.
It's a fatty.

I have an old fatty -- bought about 6 months after the PS3 was launched if memory serves -- and I seem to get better framerates than most.
FWIW, I have nothing on my PS3 other than Dust, it has an SSD, it runs on a wired connection, and I use a low-latency gaming monitor. |

Running with a Slim myself and never had any real issues throughout the time I've been playing Dust, at least none that I could relate to the PS3... Seems it's already been said though, but if you can manage, get an SSD beforehand. The performance boost is massive and if it's just to play Dust, you don't have to even worry about losing your old data or transferring it over to the new drive.
Also, you might need to go to a few AA meetings to get your addiction sorted out. I'm sure a few 12-step programs will help you ween yourself away from Dust.

I played it over a wireless connection and didn't experience any problems.
I also own a slim and super slim with SSD. I continue to get uber laggy low fps performance with those two machines. These machines are on ethernet cable to improve network performance but I still get huge lag.
One consideration concerning lag is that I experienced the best game play during the early period of Dust. Perhaps the CCP servers have fallen into a state of disrepair or can't handle the load or for whatever reason, lag has crept in more heavily in the time that has passed since then. In other words, perhaps the ps3 systems are not the problem. I don't know. Just offering that up as a possibility.
Yeah there has to be something specific about these systems. What size PS3 Super Slim do you have? i know you have an ssd but what was the HDD size when you bought it? |

But do you have Monster HDMI Cables? Because I think that's why you're having so many problems.
I recommend the Extreme Overload Fresh Roasted Ultimate Mega Atomic Lightning Diamond Platinum Alpha Dues Obliteratrix Cables.
Here are the specs;
24k Gold Plated Diamond Encrusted Superconducting Quantum Entanglement Connectors Forged by Hephaestus Himself.
Pure Plutonium-Cored Wires Glazed in the Mucus of an Enchanted Hagfish Wrapped in Eldritch Seaweed Coated with Copper Stripped from the Statue of Liberty and then Entwined with Strands of Platinum then Slid into a Sleeve Made of Pure Mithril and then Covered with a Final Sleeve Woven from the Hair of a Seraph.
Then Finally the Cable is Blessed by Perun and Imbued with the Power of Lightning and then Sent into the Core of the Earth to Age for Three and a Half Months While Being Worshipped by a Clan of Lava Monsters who Infuse the Cable with Vril Before Being Brought Back to the Surface and Soaked in the Blood of Christ and then Rinsed off with the Tears of the Cherokee.
They only cost $750,000, half of your own soul and a sacrificial Cookie-Cutter Shark.

I currently own a ps3 slim and so far she hasnt failed me on Dust nor on MAG. Rip MAG Jan 28, 2014. Anyway in my opinion I woukd say the Slim is better to go. Its quite, barely makes any noise unless you play it none stop then you may want to clean it twice a month becuase the Dust that builds on its fans. Makes it heat a bit and Noise as well. Plus its alot cheaper now.
Ive never owned the Fat Ps3 nor the Super slim.
Hopw it helps (:

from what ive read the only difference in the chipset once they took hardware ps2 emulation out was moving to a smaller manufaturing process |

I have a PS3 from 2008ish, and overall, not bad. Not good, but not bad either. 1v1 battles don't lag that much, if I have them. (I'm a scout) What I did was set up my PS3 next to my router, and other than a couple crashes due to overheating, (5 hours of Dust lol) My PS3 works decent.

At the end of the day, the slim does just fine.
SSD - Why put it in?
As one person stated, you do get decreased loading times in all your games.
The REAL benefit
Reduced heat on the system! This alone will extend the life of your PS3 and provide a much more enjoyable experience regardless of the game. I rarely have my fan kick up to high speed even with BF4 screaming.
A nice 128GB SSD with built in TRIM runs about $80. Just gotta look around. |

I had an issue with system overheat on my slim. I had my ps3 on a shelf in the tv stand. It wasn't getting proper ventilation; only recycled its own already hot air. I moved it out and put it on a wire rack so its off the floor and can get air from all sides. Problem solved.

I did the same exact thing. And it was ****. I'm going to try the 500gb super slim over the weekend and try it. I'll report back in this thread with the results.
Of note when you insert the SSD into the 12gb super slim it recognizes it instantly and can use it for the system without updating it like you have too with the other model ps3's. I wonder if the Flash memory capabilities mess with the system's ability to run dust. Damn I wish I knew a game developer/not completely tech clueless person like myself.

Found that my PS3 Fat ran hotter than my current PS3 Slim. And found out too late (ugh). I've experienced latency and framerate issues from time to time, but I don't think it safe to blame the hardware (as the problems aren't consistent). |

If you're just buying a ps3 for the sole purpose of playing Dust, as stated in the OP, then the 12GB model should be adequate space. I wouldn't see a need to upgrade to the 500GB. Just look at the size of your game install size and data size in the XMB. For instance, my Dust installation uses 2764 MB and ~1 MB for game data.
Here's an article that compares the flash storage to an HDD:

I've only played DUST on my A series (which I've had Sony repair twice since release). I've had little problems in DUST with it beyond the common. I honestly believe the A series was built with the best materials (at the time) and then Sony found cheaper and cheaper ways to build PS3s from then on, especially due to extended PSN outage from hacks and other turmoil they've had to endure since PS3's release.
I cannot be bought, but I can be leased.

Ive got a PS3 Fat and PS3 Slim. Both run at very similar speeds, the Slim marginally slower as it also has GTA V, GT5, GT6 and Destiny installed, plus huge amounts of music/movies/pictures, whereas the tubby-belly one has Dust installed and thats it.
So id say the 120GB Slim.

Does anyone use the PS3 super slim NOT 12gb model?
I think they come in 250 and 500GB models...
My suspicion is the flash memory built into the Super slim 12GB model seriously fucks with the PS3's performance.
Super horrible with the 12GB
But I haven't been able to run dust on a new Super slim.
If Im right then the newest model PS3 super slim should run close to the CECH 2 model regular slim.
Hoping to get a tag on this thread addressing this, since I have noted massive differences gravely affecting ability to compete in games. |
