When I have a team that sticks torgether and holds the line, I pull out my ADV Minmatar Logi to help out. And no, I don't just stick to a heavy and farm WP. I do my best to keep everyone on their feet and at full armor. Proto needle, proto Repair Tool, always.
My question is, what would you like my 3rd equipment slot to have? I'm simply asking what the average pub player would appreciate most. I currently carry an Ishukone Nanohive. (Not the Gauged, too expensive)
Most Assaults carry a Nanohive, and the HMG has fairly sustainable ammo reserves. I feel that I could possibly be more useful elsewhere.
-I'm considering Uplinks, since there is the occasional shortage, and I want my allies back at my side quickly if they're terminated/didn't ask for a revive.
-I'm currently maxing out Active Scanners. Pros: Would provide my allies with the tactical advantage to not only fight better, but prevent anyone from flanking and taking out the prime target, me. Cons: It might be detrimental to break reps for scanning, especially if the situation is intense. Would be favorable to run a Quantum scanner if so.
Disclaimers: No, I will not use a proto suit for more equipment. I'm not loaded with ISK, and it's just a pub match. No, I will not use Remotes, as they are impractical. The things that REs do, I'm already sustaining the people who are performing those tasks. (Killing heavies, guarding points)
Thoughts?

Are you in a squad, and no one else has a scanner? Still uplinks
Are you in a squad, and someone does not have a scanner, AND two other people are already fitting uplinks? Okay fine, active scanner.

If you have a proto rep tool, you might not need a proto needle in my opinion, although its very valiant of you.
I would suggest using an enh needle and either GOOD links or indeed the gauged hives, ammo is almost always very useful.

If your trying to hold a line: spawns, needle, rep tool. If your in a squad: ammo, needle, rep tool. I would just alternate between the two.

First of all, thank you for being a logi instead of a leech.
Secondly our ammo reserves (for sentinels) aren't unlimited, and we can go through a few hundred rounds very quickly. So I would say your third equipment should be situational.
If your team is dying quicker than you can prevent, then use the uplinks. However I would prefer you to run with nanohives so fatasses like myself can lay down a nice stead stream of stopping power.

My first thought was also "I have a proto rep tool with the max bonus, why should I run anything but a MLT needle?"
Then I discovered the huge combat advantage of picking someone up at almost full HP. If it's a really intense situation where it would otherwise be a stupid revive, they have more time to survive until I lock the Repair Tool, and therefore more time to retreat to cover with me or fight on if they wish.

In my plentiful experience as an HMG heavy, I rarely have ammo problems.

I use
Logistics M-1 (STD) Six Kin Triage Rep Tool (PRO) KIN-011 Needle (ADV) K-2 Nanohive (ADV)
I rep anyone who is shooting at someone, or anyone who I hear shooting, I love keeping militia guys alive, gives them confidence and maybe they'll enjoy the game!
PRO needles are too much IMO, STD is taking the biscuit, ADV is enough for you to get points and for the guy you revived to stand a chance whilst he's being repped.
To answer your question, any nanohive which you can equip 2 of.

This is something I know already, I logi a lot.
Something else I've noticed and mentioned elsewhere on the forums: When people realize that they're in good hands, I see the revive symbol a lot more for the rest of the match. They know that someone actually helpful is on the case. Also, in my anecdotal experience, it's mostly the starter fits/noobish looking suits that don't press X. I'm guessing they don't know that they have to.
In the event that they don't request a revive, I stand over them and repeatedly pull out the injector. Makes that loud noise to signal them like "Hey, it's all good now. I gotcha bro." Works a decent amount of the time, surprisingly.

This is something I would do on a Gallente Logi. (Whenever I decide to skill into it)
But I have to keep the needle and rep tool. It's the entire reason I use the Minmatar Logi.

Hey I just had an idea. If you don't feel like squading, right before the match starts put your headset on and tell everyone to hit the revive button cause there will be a dedicated logibro on the field. Heck, could'nt hurt.

Verdict: I'm replacing the Nanohive with Uplinks. There's been some threads about the shortage, so I'll help out. (Plus Uplinks are cheaper)
I'll make a separate fit specifically for setting up a few Nanohives and running to a Supply Depot to switch back. I'll use the best Nanohives so I don't have to spam them, don't worry.

The Ishukone Gauged Nanohive & Ishukone Nanohive have the same ISK & CPU/PG costs.
I honestly don't care what you use in PUBs but if I were you I'd have mulitpule fits with different equipment, as you'll sometimes need different equipment in different situations.

Guaged is 28k ISK. Regular variant is 17k. Flux is also 17k, but costs more CPU, so I can't fit it.

Anyway, third equipment, like Atiim said, it should be situational. I tend for my overall fit to have rep tool, revive, and nanohive. Find a spot to put uplinks where some people will access easily and heal. Make your own logi station. Throw nanohives down and make the best use of the space you have. If you're in a room, don't pitch the nanohive into a corner so only half the radius is useful, put it somewhere where it is better for everyone.

Uplinks. Every since the BW change, there have been less Uplinks. It is a HUGE amount of WP. Since you are looking to be helpful, think of it like this: whenever I throw down 2 Uplinks, I get several hundred WP which means that dozens of people are looking to spawn in the battle. People need them, you provide them.
When Solo, Needle is a little 'meh' as more often than not people will be in a bad spot when they die. You will often see your Needle be pointless. When in a Squad when it can be "let's all go get Jimmy's body" it is different. Nanohives can help you repair people when you are elsewhere as well as restock their stuff. For people that like using Mass Driver, Nanohives are a godsend because they are always super low on ammo.
I would say: Repair (always), Uplink (most always), and Nanohive/Needle (when Solo or Squad)

Just build one with each, swap to the appropriate one as the match plays out.
Also, to bring up a point mentioned on the last page, you should be able to save a little ISK AND make more WP (through the additional triage) by running an advanced needle instead of proto unless the fight is at close range or in an area with poor cover. Heck, even a cheap needle would do if there is good cover, since you're running proto reps that will top off most suits super quickly. Just bringing it up to keep a real logi in business longer. I certainly do appreciate being picked up by the kind clones that do run proto needles!
Reality is the original Rorschach.
Verily! So much for all that.
