When I have a team that sticks torgether and holds the line, I pull out my ADV Minmatar Logi to help out. And no, I don't just stick to a heavy and farm WP. I do my best to keep everyone on their feet and at full armor. Proto needle, proto Repair Tool, always.
My question is, what would you like my 3rd equipment slot to have? I'm simply asking what the average pub player would appreciate most. I currently carry an Ishukone Nanohive. (Not the Gauged, too expensive)
Most Assaults carry a Nanohive, and the HMG has fairly sustainable ammo reserves. I feel that I could possibly be more useful elsewhere.
-I'm considering Uplinks, since there is the occasional shortage, and I want my allies back at my side quickly if they're terminated/didn't ask for a revive.
-I'm currently maxing out Active Scanners. Pros: Would provide my allies with the tactical advantage to not only fight better, but prevent anyone from flanking and taking out the prime target, me. Cons: It might be detrimental to break reps for scanning, especially if the situation is intense. Would be favorable to run a Quantum scanner if so.
Disclaimers: No, I will not use a proto suit for more equipment. I'm not loaded with ISK, and it's just a pub match. No, I will not use Remotes, as they are impractical. The things that REs do, I'm already sustaining the people who are performing those tasks. (Killing heavies, guarding points)
Thoughts?

I would suggest using an enh needle and either GOOD links or indeed the gauged hives, ammo is almost always very useful.
My first thought was also "I have a proto rep tool with the max bonus, why should I run anything but a MLT needle?"
Then I discovered the huge combat advantage of picking someone up at almost full HP. If it's a really intense situation where it would otherwise be a stupid revive, they have more time to survive until I lock the Repair Tool, and therefore more time to retreat to cover with me or fight on if they wish.

Secondly our ammo reserves (for sentinels) aren't unlimited, and we can go through a few hundred rounds very quickly. So I would say your third equipment should be situational.
If your team is dying quicker than you can prevent, then use the uplinks. However I would prefer you to run with nanohives so fatasses like myself can lay down a nice steady stream of stopping power.
In my plentiful experience as an HMG heavy, I rarely have ammo problems.
Though it's possible that I just suck and don't live long enough to need ammo. :P

This is something I know already, I logi a lot.
Something else I've noticed and mentioned elsewhere on the forums: When people realize that they're in good hands, I see the revive symbol a lot more for the rest of the match. They know that someone actually helpful is on the case. Also, in my anecdotal experience, it's mostly the starter fits/noobish looking suits that don't press X. I'm guessing they don't know that they have to.
In the event that they don't request a revive, I stand over them and repeatedly pull out the injector. Makes that loud noise to signal them like "Hey, it's all good now. I gotcha bro." Works a decent amount of the time, surprisingly.

This is something I would do on a Gallente Logi. (Whenever I decide to skill into it)
But I have to keep the needle and rep tool. It's the entire reason I use the Minmatar Logi.

Verdict: I'm replacing the Nanohive with Uplinks. There's been some threads about the shortage, so I'll help out. (Plus Uplinks are cheaper)
I'll make a separate fit specifically for setting up a few Nanohives and running to a Supply Depot to switch back. I'll use the best Nanohives so I don't have to spam them, don't worry.

I honestly don't care what you use in PUBs but if I were you I'd have mulitpule fits with different equipment, as you'll sometimes need different equipment in different situations.
Guaged is 28k ISK. Regular variant is 17k. Flux is also 17k, but costs more CPU, so I can't fit it.
