So, my buddy Piraten Hovnoret has been experimenting with chats and lag.
When he's in his actual corp Molon Labe, he frequently has huge lag issues. If he switches to his own little corp that has only himself and one of his alts in it, there's a huge improvement to the lag situation.
The rather significant difference, of course, is that there's no activity in his corp chat in that other corp, and there isn't any alliance chat.
I suggest either of the following is implemented:
- Auto-disable all chats while the player is in battle, excluding team and squad chat, plus any third chat where voice is enabled.
- Or let us enable and disable individual chats, with disabled being the default setting during battle.

Woohoo, my first blue tag!
An additional thought: If simply disabling the chat makes people mad about "losing chat history" while in battle - ie. someone posts something that you miss due to not receiving new messages while it's disabled - I suggest you implement a simple universal cache for each chat's previous 30 minute history (or the number of minutes/messages backwards in time the chats currently display).
That is, when a player comes out of battle, the client first requests the cache for each of that player's chats, replaces the previous content of each chat with the returned cache and then resumes regular chat pinging/polling. Don't bother parsing the cache to figure out which comments are new, just over-write the old chat history, way cheaper computationally speaking. |

How will we communicate?
As individual squads?
That wouldn't be good or tactical or high-level team play for the highest form of battle in this tactical shooter.
HOWEVER, the idea is genius, and needs to be implemented.
Perhaps allowing us to make platoons and have a platoon chat that is enabled....?
That's that third channel I mentioned. When in a PC, you're presumably voiced in some kind of PC chat. Any chat you're voiced in would stay active for text, as well as the squad and team chat. The main goal would be to temporarily disable any chats that are not directly relevant to the battle, with the corp and alliance chats being the most important ones - since they tend to have a lot of players and activity in them. |

If anything, my biggest peeve with chat is that there's no notification during a battle of discussion in channels, unless you open up the chat sidebar yourself. Thankfully there is not. People have a hard enough time focusing on objectives. It's very hard to both play the game and socially interact with people because everyone is on a 30 minute response delay if they're in a match.
But do you really need to? If you're in a match, why not actually play that match, rather than type in a chat? And if you really do need to communicate quickly with one or several specific people (even if you're in a match), there's always mail - which does give you an in-match notification.
Also, even if in-match notifications of chat messages were broadly desirable in most players' opinion (having something nag me every few seconds while I'm in a match would drive me personally crazy), I am emphatically of the opinion that something as game-breaking as ongoing lag and/or lag spikes trumphs a convenience feature that very few players would use regularly. If the chats create lag, and fixing that is technically infeasible within the resources available to CCP ATM, then temporarily disabling chats not pertaining to the particular game you're in is the far better option, IMO. |
