There are more things to say than just "It's op". You have to see this as a whole.
Maps are globally designed for close to mid range fights. Most objective positions are inside cities, or protected by structures. The HMG excel in these places.
The heavy suit has a lot of HP so they are the hardest guys to kill. Being slow is a fair price to reach such big amounts of life.
But the suits are pretty well balanced, they dont need any nerf (gal and amarr should switch back their layout but that's me^^).
The HMG is EXTREMELY powerful at CQC. It is what it's meant to be (or supposed to be): a CQC killer only.
Thing is, as I said before, coupled with a very high HP suit, and a CQC environment most of the time, HMGs wreck everything everytime!
Now I think the range is much higher than it should be (it hits VERY hard at 30+ meters where it shouldn't be efficient). And even if it is meant for CQC, it should not be as powerful as it is for balance's sake.
Heavy spam is the worst spam. It ruins a battle, and only a team of decent scouts + REs can POSSIBLY fight them. Or another team of heavies..
Heavy spam is so frequent that it's impossible to deny that the HMG is, indeed, overpowered. Otherwise, why would every single PC match I play are heavy battles only (with scouts trying to boom them)?

Yes he's got a **** load of Amor but he cant walk or sprint very fast. He's good for point defensive and that's about it. Hoever I prefer the fast heavy that can flank them in meet seconds and can mow them down instanly in the back |

in extreme cqc it sucks since everyone can just run circles around the heavy while killing them,
the range is fine and if anything should get a buff, its a sustained stream of minigun fire, theyre pretty damned accurate weapons even at longer ranges.
heavy spam is the worst? the best maps are doms where you have a full team of heavies and logis against another team of heavies and logis, you get crazy **** happening and everyone gets a nice fat isk and sp payout
also heavies are the easiest things to kill in the game because they are so huge and slow, hardest thing to kill? cal scout |

620 dps vs shields, 820+ dps vs armor on a mlt hmg with zero skill investment. With proficiency, damage mods and better hmg's these numbers just get higher.
Boundless HMG with proficiency 5 and damage mods kill a completely bricked amarr sentinel in less than 2 seconds. HMG's have too much dps. I think their advantage shouldn't in terms of dps, but in terms of ammo carried, lower their dps to a bit above AR level tone their ammo consumption down to ALEX Hmg officer weapon level and let them fire 300 rounds off at once if they so choose.
Boundless HMG is 910.8 DPS vs armor right off the starter line, without dmg mods or proficiency.

As per CCP Rattati last known statement's, HMG DPS is "good." Melting people in milliseconds is intended.

The HMG is a smidge too weak for the first time in a long time. Not since hit detection was absolutely god awful has it been weaker than it should be. You have to wear a fat suit to use it, ffs.

The HMG does not need to be nerfed. I run a scout suit with 87 armor and 198 shields, if I can do a B line towards a heavy and kill him with nova knives, then you can try a little harder. Blueshields are the worst for HMG/SMG users. Just stack on some more shields and you'll be fine.
+1 for the preservation of the heavy. Heavy: noun- a dying mercenary breed of fat a**es.
I'm a try-hard, because half my team sits in the MCC.
