I don't think Commando's need a giant across the table buff, but they definitely need to find their role.
An in between suit that falls between Heavy and Assault doesn't seem particularly necessary. The Assault is much better at traversing landscape and assaulting positions, while the Heavy is much better for Point Defense and CQC.
I think all commandos should:
-Hold a lot more ammo -Have a higher passive scan -Be given a grenade slot -Maybe be a tad faster -Stronger melee
With different bonuses besides a flat damage increase such as:
-Bonus to passive scanning cloaks -Bonus to explosives or splash damage -Resistance to specific weapon types
Currently the only thing I use Commandos for is an AV / Assault Hybrid So that I can carry swarms and still defend myself from infantry.
I think that's a great roll, but the suit needs to be more versatile to be really useful.
I think Commando's should become Scout Hunters.
Scouts don't really have a counter now besides other scouts.
Give Commando's more ammo, a high passive scan, with the possibility to penetrate cloaks, and resistance to melee weapons. Commando's would be responsible for sniffing out scouts from whatever rat holes they choose to hide in in cities, if so configured.
Commando's would still be easy to spot and outrun, but give scouts something to fear in city maps.

TLDR
-Give grenade slot -Make Commandos into more of an AV / ASSAULT hybrid, with bonuses that reflect that -Make Commandos be able to configured into Scout Hunting platforms. With bonuses to help with that. -Give Commando's an explosive bonus, and splash increase along with grenades
