The system already struggles with 16 vs 16, adding more will add significantly more burden on the system without much gain in quality of gameplay.
Tell that to the MAG players who use to see at least 128 players in a single match.
The point here is that it's doable and MAG proved that point. The only reason MAG was shut down was because the company that created it couldn't afford to maintain the servers that can handle that kind of load.
Eve Online sees about 1,000 players in a single star system (Jita comes to mind) and they have no problems handling that many players. The Tranquility server -- the same server that handles Dust as well -- can handle millions of transactions a day, thousands of stargate jumps a day, and can even handle a fleet battle of nearly 3,000 players shooting each other with missiles, bombs, drones, and other ammunition. I'm pretty sure Dust can be carefully setup to handle 32vs32 as long as CCP can figure out how to work out the optimization of the game. If the PS3 can handle 128 players fighting in the same match in MAG, it can handle 32vs32 for Dust.

The game already don't work properly with 16v16 players, it'll make it unplayable with twice that number. Let CCP fix their servers and optimize the game much before adding this.
The server is not what needs fixing. It's doing just fine at least for the Eve Online players who reside in it. It's Dust's Unreal 3 Engine that needs fixing.

And that's my point exactly. To say that 32vs32 on the PS3 is not going to happen is like practically saying MAG never existed. Dust can probably handle it as well but it needs to be more optimized to be able to keep it stable with a higher number. I wonder how MAG did it.

PS3 can handle 128 players on a team for a grand total of 256 individual players on the map at once. "128 players fighting in the same match" <--those were just the mid-sized battles (I <3 Acquisition, oh how I miss her)
Well... ****... that just reinforced my point.

I would be open to pulling the Gallente Research Facility or other maps that generate serious lag issues for a game mode that has a signfificantly higher match size. You could put in a smaller rotation of maps that might be more stable and increase the player amount to see what level of preformance you can get.
Might actually be nifty to have this in Faction Warfare...large less complex maps with more players in the fight.
I would love it if they could give us 18v 18 via a hotfix. 18v18 shouldn't be to hard and it gives us 3 squads vs 3 squads.
That's one thing I like to see sooner rather than later.
