I always go for the normal variant because, unless my eye or display monitor technology are malfunctioning, splash damage is higher on the normal variant.
All the assault variant has is faster RPM, bigger clip and larger splash radius.
Looking at protofits with maxed skills, with the advanced normal and assault variant, the normal is superior in:
DPS
Splash DPS
Damage Per clip
So, I go for normal variant when killing is the goal. If equipment is what you need to deal with specifically, I'd then go for the assault.
