Sometimes I want to play without anybody else knowing that I'm online.
I would like an option to enable|disable Silent Mode.
When in silent mode, generate a random name and mask my real ID with the anonymous name - substitute the anonymous name for my ID above my avatar. - substitute the anonymous name for my ID in chat windows. - hide my PSN information from other players.

This is really more about not wanting to reply to squad requests and chit chat all of the time. Sometimes I just want to be left alone. If anonymous mode isn't a popular idea, then how about:
When in silent mode put a "(silent)" after my name, and deny any notifications. That way, friends won't expect a response.
Clone D(silent)
I would prefer complete anonymity so that nobody even knows I'm online, but whatever.

I want to use my existing character that I have spent a long time developing. I already have alts that I could use, but I don't want to do that.

Actually you have a point there about having an option to "BLOCK" incoming request. like they do in EVE Online. This way you can not be bothered with random invites to random chat's and random squads. You would still have your name etc, but if someone tries to invite you, then it would say "Player soandso is blocking all requests."

If you just change (silent) to (alone) I can fully get behind this idea.

I see no point in this. It's not even practical to implement given what the Tranquility server has to deal with on a daily basis. Every character that is created has its name forever locked for the purpose of maintaining consistency in the records that Tranquility has on every player. Every transaction, every asset, every bit of data is tied to that character for later auditing which is what CCP uses to track down players who commit suspicious activities that are not allowed by CCP. The only exception to this rule is in Eve Online when CCP recently freed up countless names from free-trial accounts that never became full-subscription accounts when Rhea was released this month.
There is also the fact that Tranquility has to constantly track millions of transactions, thousands of jumps, and tens of thousands of ships flying around while calculating their bonuses and tracking their actions every single day. To ask CCP to compile a script where thousands of names are randomly generated and then thrown away at the end of the day, I think that's kind of asking for too much.

Generating a random name to present on the client is not a laborious task. However I have changed the original request.
Sometimes I would just like some privacy. Is that too much to ask?

That's what creating alts are for.
