Just look at Beijing.

I really can't agree more with this.
Anti-intellectualism, folks! Its a side effect of gross capitalism with a side of overdemocracy. People have been groomed from a young age to think they are all equally important. That everyone's opinions are equally important. When in the grand scheme of things, opinions mean nothing. Facts are the only thing that matter. It has made stupid people, and people stupid. Stupid people that think their opinions are important.
Seriously, stupid people are pretty much the only reason I think humanity will have to eventually adopt strict eugenics policies to move forward as a species. I find eugenics to be a little bit less than moral... ...but even morals mean **** all when faced with extinction.

That is exactly the stuff that scares me. People are simply staying in doors more, buying better air conditioners, bringing water bottles everywhere, eating healthier, wearing sunscreen... These are all bandaids. We can't ignore it forever and if we do we will doom our planet disturbingly fast.
If emissions were liquor: we are binge drinking right now and show no chances of stopping or even reducing what we are doing.
I'm young right now, sixteen, and it actually scares me. If our planet is warming up this rapidly then what will things be like when I'm older? Will half of the places we live on even be liveable? What will summers be like? What will winters be like?
Is this the future we really want to bring new humans in to?

Of course many of these issues overlap, but I don't want to go on a lengthy rant hereGǪ All I can hope for is education. Education is beginning to be more lengthy, more thorough and people are starting to be expected to go on to college with several AP classes in their belts. Education may not be wisdom, but I hope that maybe through better understanding we can help thin out extreme and illogical thought. Maybe we can turn things around.
The biggest issue is people who are already old and refuse to change.
I'm not going for a utopian hippy vision. I'm going for a vision where people are intelligent, wisdom is more spread out, people are not easily fooled and hysteria has been killed off because of how much of a threat it is to society. Yes, it will take time, but I hope that by the time my generation is old enough to be in a positions to change things there will be enough wise people to speed up education.
We need good morals too. Knowledge is useless if you are not adept in how to use it. Morals are important and they can be taught to a certain point, but unlike most subjects it cannot be forced into people. Morals are willingly accepted.

Gahhh I better stop I was not going to rant You are not that old, by old I meant people in their late forties and up. Many of those people are still stuck with old problems and are trying to fix them with old solutions.
It's not completely their fault either. Humans tend to become less malleable as they get older. The thing is that these older people tend to slow down progress often enough. Not all old people are bad of course. Most are good people who have become wiser and humbler over the years, but many are not equipped for the fast changing politics of today where many views are given by many groups and people tend to forget to be objective and are rather passionate about things they shouldn't be.
This is where education steps in.
Basic and free education is good. Though I believe that all subjects should be more thorough. Things like calculus should be the standard to graduate in developed countries. History should be objective and world history should be emphasized more: particularly the study of the origins and changes of modern cultures. Philosophocal thought along with language should become harsher as I believe that current English classes are jokes where difficulty is established more on quantity than substance. Science, should be taught faster. Right now Science is far too easy in Elementary school. I didn't learn anything substantially knew or ground breaking until I was in my first class of biology in High School. That needs to change.
If more people had access to the knowledge and actually learned it then life would be better for everyone.
Not all smart people are wise, but all wise people are smart. We can only hope that by increasing the latter that the former will increase in number.

The thing that pisses me off the most about this whole issue is there is so much emphasis on taxing things and making legislation but a seeming lack of invention, care about natural resources (like the rainforests) and things of that nature.
I recently saw an interview with a guy that was an energy advisor to a country in I think it was Africa I forget which country exactly. He we aiding them in matters of power and stuff while trying his best to keep things clean. He even said himself that their best option was to go nuclear but he could not understand why both that country and international efforts were not pushing more nuclear based technology as it is by far the best option for emerging economies even if it does have its risks.
I dont expect big business to give a **** about our environment and nature though. As per usual money rules all.
I will say though that I would miss the internal combustion engine in all its glorious forms if we are eventually forced to electric vehicles. You will have to pry that from my cold dead hands you god damn tree huggers!!

Just read an interesting article about pollutant capture (sorry it was in a journal not online so no link) Company in California is capturing methane from dairy cow waste slews and using it to make plastics. Their process eliminate oil from the plastic making process. Far cleaner than previous methods and capture of other pollutants to boot. though they are still making a plastic that does not break down in any reasonable amount of time it is still progress.
Some other pollutant capture techniques do exist but not always with positive effects. Carbon capture techniques are sometimes used in LNG drilling but the effects of trapping that carbon long term are not known. They trap it underground and create carbon pockets. I don't really understand it, my spouse has a better understanding of it, she has done a fair bit of research on sustainable development practices.
