he obviously doesn't use the mouse. Or they just wouldn't say this.
To Use a mouse in DUST you first have to understand how the hit detection system works. When you play simplistic shooter games like GTA 5 for example. You put your crosshair or "Dot" For GTA's sake.. Over a target and the Crosshairs turn "Red" or "Light Up". At this point the Servers and your Playstation says "Ok your hit will now register"
Where as Counter-Strike for a classic example, you'd run to a wall and spray your weapon at it and track the bullet holes to learn the gun's behavior... Then plan shots and aiming patterns around that bullet pattern.
DUST uses the simplistic version.
You Aim, Wait... Wait... Your crosshair's light up.. You then can fire at the target and hit them with accuracy.
The Forge gun works good for some people with mouse because you wait for your crosshairs to light up then let go of your mouse button and it's usually one hit kill everytime. Very very lame.
Trying to predict where your target is running to and having the bullet meet them? Can't happen.
Sniper got changed recently and is terrible.
Most Mouse users stick around projectiles because they don't rely on the crappy hit detection system. So Mass Drivers, Flaylocks. Plasma cannons.. Or Jump in a Tank, Which aren't in the best place right now.
For Mouse sensitivity... It's best to leave it at 50 in DUST. Turn off your controller(Hold PSN Button) Then set your DPI from your mouse... Even with a good mouse and pad the fine aim is just off slightly.. it will always be slightly off consistently....Specially with Frame rate drops, which happen alot in this game.
Advice? Don't use Mouse in DUST 514. It is just terrible..
It sucks. But it is what it is... Get used to the controller if you want to play this game... Otherwise? Go find another shooter to play. |

I use mouse exclusively now. Tanking with a mouse is pretty bad because you need to move it around so much.
I've watched a friend play with controller and aim assist makes getting kills much easier at close quarters.
Everyone I play with who uses both controller and mouse will switch to mouse for sniping.

Any weapon that doesn't utilize aim assist, ie: Mass driver, flaylock pistol, Sniper rifle, etc... Everything else is better with a DS3 or Kb/M through DS3 emulation.
If you can adjust the polling rate of your mouse to 100-125Hz, that should help with the sensitivity. |

Play EVE instead, because it'll be more fun than trying to smash your head against a wall due to ass KB/M control in DUST.
Now that I've actually said it out loud... I find I'm more serious about that suggestion than I initially thought I would be.
That said, if you really want to get it done, then here's my advice.
This:
Her Chosen wrote:CR I think is the best.
is so wrong I don't even know where to begin with it. In fact, for anyone who actually uses the KB/M, it will be quite obvious as to why this is wrong.
That said I did quite religiously use the ScR for a long time, but it just ended up becoming very frustrating for some reason when Uprising 1.9 dropped, at which point I'm basically just sitting on my characters and praying for the day when we get Legion and[/] SSO so I can just run my 20+ million SP (probably closer to 50mil+ SP when Legion hits) EVE character instead.*
This advice, however:
Bethhy wrote:[Most Mouse users stick around projectiles because they don't rely on the crappy hit detection system. So Mass Drivers, Flaylocks. Plasma cannons.. Or Jump in a Tank, Which aren't in the best place right now.

Is quite reasonable and accurate. I will comment that "spray guns" like the SMG work well enough for dropping already-injured players and I personally had moderate success with the Magsec when using it as a complement to the ScR.
I do also think the LR would be moderately successful on a KB/M setup- you probably would get better results using a DS3, but the main driver in performance for a LR user is more likely to be an intimate familiarity with LR mechanics.
I would, however, caution against tanks, and instead suggest LAVs. A fit I considered using before I began a break from DUST shortly after 1.9 dropped is as follows:
Saga (IE, Caldari LAV)
60mm Basic Plate (MLT if you're cheap and it fits, I don't remember and don't care to turn on my PS3 to check) MLT mCRU or a Nitro Scanner, variant to taste/skills
Before I get to the turret choice, I'll quickly explain the module choice: most people are going to be running one of three types of suits:
freefit Starter/cheap MLT medframe rigs heavies of any variety undamped high-end medframes
Hence, a scanner offers great situational awareness. For the second high slot, a Nitro is good for getting around quickly or more likely making a fast escape (or LAV racing buddies and having contests about who can run over more blues in FW). An mCRU is going to be either you working with your squadmates, or more likely, just trying to farm +50s off of blues when they spawn in- just remember the following to bits regarding the mCRU:
1. mCRUs are only visible for spawning on them when your clone is terminated. 2. if your vehicle is full, players using the mCRU will be spawned outside the vehicle.
The plate is there to add some spare buffer if (really when) you get ambushed by something. This is especially important since most of the utility mods for vehicles are in the highs, and both highs are used for said utility. As an aside, I don't know offhand if you can fit a Nitro+mCRU+60mm plate if you forgo a turrret- but you will have to pick two out of three if you mount a gun.
For a turret, I recommend the Blaster turret. If, OTOH, you possess a Saga BPO variant, then the pre-fit missile turret that the Saga BPOs all sport is also a reasonable choice if you want to run really cheap.
Many will consider Blaster turrets to be "bad" for LAVs. My opinion is that they are more likely to kill infantry than railguns are, due to rails have lolhitreg issues. Moreover, carrying either a PLC, LR, or a FG is you want to get really into it, can compensate for not having good range on the gun.
Of course, the gun is only really there so that you can farm points off of blues who decide to jump in, much like the mCRU is there.
Also, don't listen to this guy:

While I have no experience with the two specific devices he mentions, I did at one time have a Tuact Aimon PS, which is pretty much the same thing from a different company (I love capitalism). I will comment that most reviews I saw commented on the Tuact device having a better build quality that seemed more durable, but that's not why I think his advice is bad.
It really comes down to the following two issues:
1. Using the device in "mouse mode" gives little practical advantage- about the only useful thing is being able to remap grenades from using either "X" or "G" to a thumb button.
2. Using the device in "controller mode" kills the entire purpose of using it, IMO. This has more to do with DUST's ridiculously slow DS3 controls though. However, it also seems ridiculous to me to try and emulate a DS3 using a bastardized half-and-half device, rather than just going straight for a specialty item like the XIM4.
As a side note on the XIM: I can't comment on it; I've never used one.
*My EVE toon has more swag (on account of having a real face), a cybernetic arm, [i]and' the ability to don some fine Amarrian threads. Plus, the new Confessor-class T3 destroyer is probably the best-looking ship in the entire game, and... well.

But I digress.

Tanking with a Mouse works well.. Hit detection works well... Fine aiming works well.. Rail Guns will drop consistently... So your aiming at a target and your crosshairs will just automatically start moving downwards that you then have to correct for.
As for having Lower sensitivity settings on your mouse when you jump into a tank, It's best to have a mouse with a DPI Toggle switch on the mouse. I Will up my DPI twice when i jump into a tank so I can use the turret with the same ease i use a Gun on my mercenary.
Is it wrong that a Tank turret can rotate at such speeds? Yes... But CCP Has never put much thought about what makes sense in their game.
Look at the Duvolle Tactical Nerf. They took a Semi-Automatic rifle and made it no longer fire a bullet everytime u pressed the trigger. Then patted themselves on the back for a good nerf. That's CCP Shanghai for you.

I tank regularly with my mouse. Hit detection sucks. I can sit and aim at a stationary target, position my crosshair perfectly in the centre of their fat sentinel head and do no damage for the first 3 shots. Then they die from the 4th. Similarly, I've aimed at the middle of an installation and done no damage almost every time I tank. I hadn't experienced this using controllers.
Turning with the mouse is so tedious. At one point, I used a controller for turning and mouse for shooting, but then my controller broke so I'm stuck with mouse for now. |

I Think u missed the gem of knowledge in my first post.
How Hit detection in DUST works.
You can have your aim perfectly on target... But if your Crosshair's aren't turning "Red" or "lighting up"
You will miss. Everytime.
If your crosshairs turn red and light up... You will hit everytime.
Take a Railgun on a tank... Line it up on target... Wait for crosshairs to light up... Fire... Insta kill everytime.
Installations work much the same. Even enemy tanks... You will have a perfect shot... Pretty much the enemy tank fills your entire screen but u will still miss because of the way the hit detection system works.
This is why people hate Aim assist in DUST. It has nothing to do with it being to strong... It has to do with the way Hit detection works. Once your crosshairs are over target and "Red" you have near perfect Aiming and hit detection...
Then Aim assist will actively keep you on that sweet part for a longer period of time. This is why some people can't hit you... then all of a sudden *BAM* every shot hits... and they can't miss you... Jumping... Running behind a wall... You get hit. |

You want to use Mouse? Three options basically:
1) Native Mouse If you want to use native mouse support, give up on hitscan/rifle weapons and run this fit:
[Commando M/1-Series] Complex Light Damage Modifier Complex Light Damage Modifier Complex Reactive Plates EXO-5 Mass Driver KLA-90 Plasma Cannon X-3 Quantum Nanohive
Lead with the Plamsa Cannon to deplete shields and to OKHO most sentinels, follow up with the Mass Driver.
PROS:
- Explosions
- Avoids hit detection drama via splash.
- Devastating in crowded close quarters.
- You get to be cool, like me.
CONS:
- Every competent player in the game will still own you because aim assist.
- You will blow yourself up A LOT.
- You will get owned at long distances.
- Most direct hits will not connect due to bad hit-detection and a lack of aim assist.
2) Mouse Emulator Get a Xim4, everything else is garbage.
PROS:
- You get to use an aimbot and not get banned for cheating. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
- Totally configurable key bindings and multiple hot-key profiles and sub-profiles.
- Works with X360, XBONE, PS3, PS4
- Actively developed and good community/support
CONS:
- Turn speed is limited to DS3 turn speed, which in Dust is among the slowest in any PS3 game. It will cripple your situational awareness
- You have to switch profiles manually, like when switching from infantry to vehicle mode
- Not Free
3) Wait for Legion/Dust PC Port This'll happen eventually, hopefully.
PROS:
- CCP didn't go bankrupt, yay!!
- Native Mouse support
- Likely removal of all Aim Assist
CONS:
- Can't play Eve while Playing Dust as easily
TL;DR DON'T USE MOUSE, IF MUST USE MOUSE, MAKE BOOM BOOM OR GET EMULATOR
