Numbers are up on Dust for now. The new updates are looking pretty awesome. With this recent surge in numbers, let's not squander this opportunity and scare off potential new players like we've always done.
Create a LOW- Isk+SP reward game mode with only starter fits and no vehicles. Low risk, low reward, also have an SP cap on this game type. Say, 5 million total.
Do it

I believe Ratatti said they were looking into something like this awhile back, making meta locked game modes and such that have lower payouts. Not sure how far along that particular idea is though, but I think we may be seeing it soon.

Most have tried, do CCP not see the need for this ??!!??!! A Mlt server (SP capped) would be able to replace the Academy
New players would deploy in actual battles, rather than the strange desolate Academy that is alt farmed 24/7 And booo-hooo the newb with 5mil SP will have an advantage over the guys with 500,000.. But at least the newer merc will see what Dust is like from game one rather than suffering though
- An Academy that offers no training or indication on how they should begin their mercs training.

Exactly. Starter fits only puts everyone on the same playing field. I would also propose auto-squadding individual players.
No suit customization either. That would be restricted unless players entered public matches.
After a few matches in starter fits only, a new player could be prompted with a message
"Would you like to create a custom suit for use in public matches? " And taken to the fittings screen. When their suit is complete they would be told they would need to enter the more competitive Public Contracts in order to use their suit.
Baby steps! This game would be much more enjoyable for newbs!

Booom! and the NPE is improved ten-fold with this minor change. Allowing Academy mercs alter fits was like handing a drunk your car keys ... Of course they were going to drive it!! just as scrubs have farmed the Academy.

Can confirm he would do this.. And so would I and every other experienced merc that got bored/burned in higher meta servers
Dust mercs average 20 million SP at this stage I don't think it's gamebreaking to allow mercs well below 10m to escape fighting that What has been proven to be game-breaking is doing nothing about the NPE

No.
Random blueberries are random.
Only way *we* are gonna level the playing field is by inviting these randoms to our corps / squads etc and actually talking to them to explain stuff to them.
Any form of tiered lobby is not going to make the random better. Nor is automatically throwing them into a squad. I do not think levelling the playing field like this will be enough. You can't force good habits and battle awareness into them. It must be taught.
The key is to help them realise that's what they need to do to learn. Are they even gonna know they're in a squad? How many times have you joined a squad ad-hoc and the squad done nothing together as a squad during battle?
Restrict battles in some way and watch the noobs get steam-rolled still. They just won't blame the proto...if they even recognise what that is. They need a corp.

fair point - but the beauty of Dust is that it's difficult. You wouldn't want them to nerf dark souls so people stopped dying loads - just for example.
Absolutely make the academy last longer - and make the game warn new players what awaits them in the real world of new eden. But don't go tiered with match making. it should be a free for all. it should be about sticking with it to get the rewards.
I suggest more information within Merc Quarters. More warnings about the evil nature of life as a merc in New Eden. Make it known how much you are going to die when you try to take on better players.

I'm about as positive as you get for a Dust player but let's be real here, there is no "surge" in player count
In fact the chart for new clones being born has been consistently decreasing for a while, although that's almost certainly due to the starting clone ISK being nerfed

hehe yeah. Just watched a Valkyrie trailer thingy the other. They got Katee Sackhoff to say "harden the **** up".
This is a mantra, albeit used too easily to dismiss ppls opinions.
Also make it known *why* you are going to die when you try to take on better players. It's not just the suit.
I've been wondering whether CCP plan to use the daily missions (apart from the obvious "just one more game" grind) to help noobs understand more things. Earn assists as a gunner in someone's vehicle. Hmmm.....how do I find someone to let me be a gunner...etc. Team-based battles aspect can be promoted with carrots

Katee Sackhoff's in Valkyrie? Fantastic.
I think you're right about the missions. If a new player is paying attention (not too much to ask) then they should be able to use missions to learn quickly.
Plus the game needs to push you into squading with more experienced players right from the moment you leave the academy. Once I stepped into a proper squad it was like levelling up without levelling up if you know what I mean.

While it does not "force" new players into squads (I agree the Academy should teach more on that), it does provide for a sandbox where more-likely-to-be-solo noobs won't get q-sync squad-stomped.
Will they still get killed by another player with better gear and more skillpoints? Yes. They should. That gives them a goal and perspective. But a flatter reward system and lack of squads and q-syncing will mean they don't get repeatedly killed by the same guys over and over again.
At the same time, it doesn't have all the inherent problems of gear tiering AND provides a super-coordination game mode that will encourage them to squad up and/or join corps.
FPS = First Person Support. Kills win battles but it's kinda hard to kill if you're dead and out of ammo.

Getting killed by higher tiered players definitely doesn't give players a "goal and perspective". That's pure silliness.
I fully believe in the tiered system, However I believe players should be allowed to gradually walk into the water, rather than dive right into the deep end.

Or grant a skill boost to low SP chars until they reach about 10M. That allows them to catch up to the rest of us and get playing this game. No new player is going to pay for AUR in a game they just started and they also won't pay for a game they are getting trashed in over and over. I personally want a more even ground when playing the game and more players are pretty good. Let's get them "geared" fast.
