I used a plasma cannon for the first time today. I was wondering what the optimal and practical attack ranges are, what the best targets are (crowd of troops? Vehicles? Heavies?), and what the various styles of using the weapon are. Also, which PLC skills and skill levels are bare minimum for decent performance of the weapon?
Do you damage mod PLC or is the raw damage enough? Thanks.
I mounted my PLC on a speed tanked min scout for training purposes. That seemed to work out rather well. Any particular fitting that works best with PLC?

Plasma Cannons are AV weapons but can be used on infantry and do well so long as you don't need to be in a hurry to reload. Ideally putting a Plasma Cannon on a Gallente Commando would be a good choice as you get a damage buff and a second weapon to swap to in case you missed.
The State will always survive.

Fitting op is useful, so is reload (Commandos benefit most here), ammo capacity works if you can't run hives - I run Min Scout/Heavy w/Plasma and enjoy the fits, though Galmando is the King of Cannons |

Attack ranges should be 30 meters and less unless you're applying supportive fire. Against infantry, outside of that range you'll have a hard time landing bodyshots and against vehicles you won't be able to get in enough shots until the vehicle drives out of range. Both of this changes when others are shooting too. In that case just open up and make it rain plasma.
Usage on a (any) commando is preferred. The commando's reload bonus greatly amplifies the PLC's DPS. Stack this with rapid reload, the Galmando's damage bonus and a damage mod and you're going to get a very fun weapon. The damage mod is mostly useful to your second light weapon. The PLC generally doesn't profit well from the damage mod due to its large alpha (4.8 shots-to-kill against a vehicle minus 7% still rounds up to 5 and 1 shot to kill on infantry minus 7% still rounds up to 1).
My personal strategy works like this: Have AR out most of the time, use active scanner to scout for heavies. If heavy is detected, blap with PLC, otherwise proceed with AR. |

I use the PLC mostly for AV, paired with a Swarm on a Commando or buddied up with a second Merc using a Swarm while I have a back-up Light Weapon on a Commando. I do use the basic one for supporting fire, clearing objectives etc as well as 1-shotting the occasional unlucky Sentinel trying to make a push down a long corridor.
As posted above, infantry kills generally happen within 30m, although i have gotten a kill against a sniper at around 100m.
I used to be a Squad Lead like you, but then I took a Thale's to the knee.

You should stop by the research lab, I'll give you a crash course homey :)
quickly though- Reload Speed is KEY to this weapon, because it IS your fire-rate. So I would focus on leveling that up first. Then Proficiency and Ammo Cap.
Then Optimization when you are trying to make the most extreme fittings.. the ones that should ALMOST not exist.

PLASMA/PISTOL/PUNCH

It works best on the Gallante Commando because you can get both damage and reloading boosts. The extra damage is great against armor vehicles since the Plasma Cannon proficiency only affects shields.
