It's possible he was stacking enough damage mods to compensate along with maxed out core skills and a maxed out shotgun proficiency. I can turn a pair of militia nova knives into wrecking machines if I skill up everything necessary and sacrifice all of my defenses for that extra bit of damage.

Proto Shotty deals 475 damage a shot to armor, and 668 to shields in one shot (Assuming all 12 pellets connect) Running anything less than this on a fit makes you liable to insta-blapping
I know Ishukone Nova Knives, when fully charged on a Scout Mk.0 with all complex damage mods, will instantly OHK almost every heavy in the game. I've even killed a tank with these butter knives.

True, but there are two problems with your suggestion.
Minscouts have no bonus to melee and I want all of my victims to drop dead on the first hit. No need to waste time following up with a Falcon Punch if they're already dead.
