Rattati has been working on changes to limit equipment spam as well as attempting to balance EWAR. He's doing it all with community feedback. That's admirable.
There is a devblog slated for sometime this week too.
Progress is being made. Considering that Dust 514 is basically being run by Rattati, Logibro, Frame, and a plucky Chinese intern who thinks she is working on China's Got Talent... this is actually very impressive.

Well, Firaxis has a patch in the works that should be out before mid-December. It is pretty massive; announcement linky. I'm enjoying it even without the balancing patch.
I've noticed that if you dig deeply into the Skill Tree's "leafs" the game slows down at times. I go on a branching spree early game and prioritize science buildings first while picking up everything in the Knowledge virtue I can. So far, it's been a winning strategy for me. The Might virtue is pretty OP at the moment; especially that one ability that gives you science for every alien you kill. It's insane.
Civ V will always have a special place in my heart. I am a diehard England player and I love playing multiplayer with three RL friends of mine. But Civ: BE is futuristic and I eat that theme up (e.g. Dust 514). I could see Civ: BE replacing Civ V for me if Firaxis devotes some patches to it and maybe an expansion or three.
