So long as people have PS3s and an internet connection, there will be folks heading into the free to play section.
However, creating new characters is not the problem this game has, it's maintaining them.
CCP could advertise the game so well that 500 people made new toons every day for the next 5 yearss regardless of PS4 prevalence, but it means jack all if none of them stay longer than a week.

The PS2 survived for 13 years and the PS3 is reaching upon its decade from release. This system has long ways to go before its fall, and DUST will continue till the severs shut down(CCP couldn't kill it at fanfest). There is still a steady stream of new players, I see them all the time in my local, but wether they stay after a day is a different story. We need to fix NPE!

I cannot see why new players would stay,
I am amazed I did not give up after a proto stomp or after realizing the people that make the gear in the playstation store do not actually play the game and make crappy gear
It was pure luck I played around with dropships and actually fluked putting a drop uplink on a tall building I was to scared to land it.
It was pure luck I saw the good side it is hidden from new players, they will go and play something that looks and sounds better. |

You're right they will demo DUST on the PS4 with morpheus teasers, and tell the "PC master" race SOON.
CCP needs to follow the money, and the money is moving to the PS4.

Yea seriously this game gets hundreds (at least) of new players to try it every day. However because the new player experience is so poor, is lacking severely in proper tutorials and stable game modes for the noobs that most of them stop playing :(

It has nothing to do with the technology. The PS2 lasted so very long despite it's predecessor being out for a while; hell, Sony was stealing the market from themselves when the PS3 was launched. With The Great Recession and people still not fully recovered, it will be probably longer until people transition to PS4. The fact that DUST is on the PS3 instead of the PS4 does not really hurt it all that much.
What DOES hurt is that DUST 514 is not a good game. It is an okay game, mediocre really. Sure, you can have some fun with it shooting people but if you are looking for an experience that is "shooting people" there are other games out there that will give a better experience for "shooting people." DUST does offer something different than other games on consoles in regards to the building your characters and fits to do what you want but that takes a fair amount of time and investment in the game to be able to do that. All a new player knows is that they get on the game, use their starter fits, and immediately see that they are unable to kill people at the ranges that they are dying at or "I got the drop on that guy, shot him point blank, and he just turned and killed me!" because they have 1/3 the HP of a veteran in Prototype gear.
"Big deal; I can start a new account and kill people with Militia gear!" And I am sure you also know that the STD tag doesn't mean Sexually Transmuted Diseases, that you cannot kill a Sentinel in close range, and know where to put your points to be most effective in the shortest amount of time. New players don't have that. Think back to where you started playing. Was it beta, to where everyone was fairly close in SP? Did you have a friend that taught you how to play and gave you the tools to learn to play? I know I started about three weeks after the final SP reset so there was only advanced level gear (jeez, the first person to Prototype suit posted on the forums and they had NOTHING else), I had played EVE so I knew how to fit a suit, and I was playing with family so I had a reason to slog through it.
I barely keep playing with the incredible lag, subpar visuals, boring audio, and limited game play and I am a bitter vet. If I didn't have the knowledge I had when I started playing and/or I started playing when Prototype gear was ubiquitous, I likely would not have continued playing this game. I can say, completely honestly, that this game is something I enjoy but it is a mediocre game overall. I cannot see many fresh newbies coming to join and stay in this game as it is currently.

Believe it or not... There are giant markets outside of the westernized world
These markets tax goods that are not directly made in their country. Like Brazil, where a PS4 costs around 1,800 dollars US. And a PS3 costs 300ish.
These countries like Brazil, India etc accept technology at a different rate. The PS3 has still years and years of life in the marketplace... The Game library, Streaming potential with Netflix in HD with Optical audio, A blue ray player and a fast one. The PS3 is just entering product cycles in these markets and will be around for years in them. The bang for buck is just to hard to ignore.
The Next generation of games for the new consoles haven't offered the average consumer that "WOW" moment where they truly feel that it is "Next Gen".. Until those game products start cycling into the western markets in 2016.. There will be very minimal incentive to buy a next gen console other then those with expendable income sitting around or following a group of friends over. |

I always hear people talking about "Next gen" and all of that crap.
Still to this day I feel Crysis 1 was a bigger step forwards than most other games since and that game is old now. That being said the FOX engine being used for the new Silent Hill does look ground breaking visually.
Visuals aside however, gameplay seems to be taking a backseat and in some regards is regressing in this modern era of instant gratification nonsense.

I have tried to get so many of my friends into this game and they all leave as soon as they get out of the battle academy. They do really well when all the gear is equal and then when they get proto stomped and nearly kill proto players by about 2 armour left, it's just stupid in their eyes and also in my eyes. I stuck this game out enough to play at that level but for a new player it's an absolute joke of an experience and no casual player wants to deal with that. Even these APEX suits are useless for new players. I bought them purely for looks because no matter how good you are at this game, the better gear player will win if the skill level is even. And I have had many fps players from PC and console quit for that reason. They are not bad players, they just get out geared and it takes FOREVER to get even to advanced level with boosters.
The most frustrating feeling in this game is in a 1 on 1 fight, me with my standard it, nearly taking down a proto assault and him surviving on 5% hp. He won because of GEAR alone and in an FPS, this just isn't good.
I mean, you have to spend AGES just getting 25% more shield and armour on your suits. Like that is already a massive disadvantge.
Throwing new players into proto geared matches and they have not even got the max possible hp for their suits yet? I just hope Legion gets the green light, we all get to move our characters over because THAT is the only inspiration I have left to play this game. Which is a shame because this has the potential to be such a good game. |

Everyone needs to keep in mind that PSN logins are a very easy metric to track, and the number of PS3 to PS4 users is still MASSIVELY skewed toward the former.
Doing a migration to the new console at this point would not be a sensible business move. They need to wait longer for more people to buy the console and other games to come out to incentivize that larger number.

Waiting means more games coming out for the PS4 which players will flock to, meaning players will be less likely to even try out DUST when ported. Meanwhile you're bleeding players on the PS3.
Getting it on PS4 sooner with fewer games out means players will play DUST.

I b*tch about this every time one of these new systems, controllers, etc. break these days.
I have all my original consoles since the old woodgrain Atari and it wasn't until PS2 the consoles just started breaking.
N64 was rough on the controllers but the damn console didn't break too. These DS3 controllers are the worst yet. Every 6 months or so I have to replace it.

When i was new, the only reason I stayed is because I had played much more difficult PC games like Quake, so I knew that there was a learning curve, and that it was possible that it could be awhile before I got the hang of things. Thats also why I didn't take the easy way out and do my progression with a squad. I gritted my teeth and made it work solo.

Dust still suffers from a horrible NPE and lower SP/skill players being stomped and having nowhere to go to escape the proto overlords. Rattati has done a great job with balance and great changes to various mechanics, and the rifles, equipment, and suits--and making your own fittings--are unique and superior to those in any other game. Theres a lot of fun to be had and a lot to like about Dust for a veteran like me, but if I started the game now....I think it would be too brutal and punishing for me to want to invest much time in it. |
