Just want to hear some of the stupid things you did when you started playing. Here's a few of mine, all from when I started back in May 2013.
- I literally thought passive SP was gained only while you were logged in. So for almost a month I would login to DUST even if I wasn't playing so that I could collect passive SP.
- First jump out of the MCC was a death. I was like oh this is sweet... splat.
- First time I jumped on a Rail Gun Installation I started shooting the MCC and actually believed I was doing damage.
I've seen guys who thought logi's were hurting them. One guy in chat was like why the ****'s this guy keep shooting me with a yellow beam? He started shooting his logi. LoL who else has some great stories?
If you're not wearing proto, you're doing it wrong.

haha i think everyone, in their first game though that a cheap and easy way to victory was "hey i'll just use this turret!" then you see the MCC's health go down and actually think you're doing right by your team 
as for other habits, I don't think I've grown out of them yet!

In the first couple of days, i wasn't able to understand how people were killing me while i was using installations, but i wasn't able to kill them.
Then i've realized that i was not entering the installation.
Situational awareness also known as passive scan.

I remember when I got my first logi Mk.0 proto suit.
I ran that thing NON-STOP for days, maybe longer. I had never really done PC so I was basically living on checks from game-to-game and I was replacing individual modules and weapons because I didn't have enough money to restock the whole suit lol. Slayer logi was king and I loved that damn suit so much, all those triage hives and 360 scans, I felt like a ******* pro with my 1000 eHP lol.
Now I still run proto all the time, I can just afford it because of PC <3

Oh I got another, I used to hold down and manually swap my weapon. Took me a few weeks before I figured out you could just tap R2, then it took another two weeks to get used to not manually doing it 
If you're not wearing proto, you're doing it wrong.

I thought the same about the passive sp at first also. For a good couple weeks.
First game I was afraid to jump from the mcc, and thought, these guys are stupid as I watched other people jump. After circling around the mcc for a while trying to figure out what to do next I finally decided to jump, and splat.
Once I finally survived the fall I ran every direction except towards the objective. Probably tried to shoot a few blue dots, I don't remember... definitely shot at the mcc with a turret. Probably was my own mcc too...
Think I stole someone's tank and immediately drove it out into the red line.
Then I became a tanker and did nothing but hunt other tanks, completely ignoring infantry. When I couldn't afford more tanks I troll medic'd the hell out of any downed teammate, yeah I was that guy at first. Youre welcome and I'm sorry depending on if you survived or not. Lol. Spent the next several months trying to bring my stats back up. At one point my kd was like .2 or something.
Good times I tell ya, good times indeed.

When I first started in Open Beta, you were automatically put in a squad.
At the start of the battle, I would see a lot of blues, and then suddenly a different color. I assumed that was because they were the enemy.
I would shoot them, and not do any damage. Sometimes they would shoot back, confirming my suspicion they were the enemy, so I would continue firing, only to perplexedly stop when I saw I wasn't doing damage.
Later on those matches, I saw red thingies, and they would generally kill me. So those were DEFINITELY the bad guys. But who were those not blue but not red guys? And if they weren't bad guys, why were they shooting at me too?
Then one day in the war barge (back when it was still around for pub matches), I noticed those guys standing around. And I checked the team list, and sure enough, they were in my squad...
Sorry for shooting you open beta squad members. I honestly didn't know.

I played for six months before i got a headset or joined a squad. Stopped joining squads for a while cause i thought everyone was bitching about "stupid 2Berries". I'm guessing 70% of the time it was really "stupid blueberries".
Have you considered a career in costumed aggression?

i thought we got INTO the installations when operating them so i was liek WTAF when id get killed while useing them for the first week or two.
second stupid thing was rolling caldari assault for my first charater.. big mistake

I used the Laser Rifle as a Close Quarters weapon for the first X weeks of beta and could not understand why I did more damage at range than up close.
My First Dust 514 Character was Minmatar.

Here is my. It took me 1 year to notice that I had 20 million unused SP that in May 2014 I started using SP. Now at 26 million Sp.
I can't believe in that 1 year I've been running the basic unlimited militia dropsuits xD
MAG Raven vet 7 times. Favorite weapon F90 and Highest Kills 78 and 23 deaths.

Caldari Assault for main character? I ran 3 months of mlt Caldari starter suits. Needless to say, I sucked a ton thinking I had more armor than shield. I would've totally rocked with Gallente suits.
Anyways, I never died from MCC splat. Nor did I bother with installations after having nothing to shoot at (eventually I would get a 12 kill streak with a railgun).
In awe of HMG sentinels doing what seemed like god-mode damage and always getting the high-hand in the usual fight (AR's range = HMG range = close range), I skiled into lvl 2 heavy frame, then HMG, because I had to actually skill up for that godmode wep.
I never saw either the Callogi or the TAC AR dominate. It was a healthy mix of all sorts of deaths (though snipers were prevalent then). Never killed by a scout until the Black Eagle Event, where some black-suited deity would give me heart attacks and inspire me to skill into NK's. (I thereafter knifed a few with my still starter suit).
The Duvolle was terrifying though, and so was its smaller cousin, the GEK. Then the Scrambler became the thing...
It was 3 months when I got the ADV Cal Assaults and Logis. Bleh. But I would skill into Proto Assault a week before dropsuit command respect, and raged when a MLT lite gunned me down.
It was after 1.8 when **** would really come together and I understood everything.
Give the Magsex some love.

I wasted all my isk on dropships
I called all my dropships in the middle of the battle zone.
I used knives on my assault suit.

LOL, donGÇÖt call yourself stupid for that, JIMvc2. I have run around in a slightly pimped Medic dropsuit fit from my wardrobe for more than a year now. It costs about 4,050 ISK to replace, no matter what experimental module IGÇÖm wearing when I get killed (...and I get killed a lot!)
I felt so danged naked standing in the warbarge lobby, seeing everyone else in a full fitted suit, that I used to walk off to the corner under the stairs (you know the corner I mean), and stand by myself until the match starts.
But being so stingy was worth it. I am now comfortably wealthy.
My early STOOP-ID was as a gunner on someoneGÇÖs dropship. The dropship had no reppers. I had a handheld repper. WeGÇÖd just killed about 24 mercs with the onboard turrets, but the dropship was now smoking from all the damage, and had to land.
I was so eager to try out this new hand-repper I bought, that I hopped out in the clear on the side of the parked dropship, fired the repper at it and watched the fire go out, heard the engines of the DS and thought GÇ£cool,... as a damaged dropship engine starts to heal, it starts to sound just like one of those LAVs driving at high speed.GÇ¥

My squad laughed so hard---and this was back when MICs were still trendy---it must have looked so hilarious when I got road-killed! No one could make his voice sound serious for the rest of the matches.

wow. Even at that time I had no idea how to unlock other weapons. Especially the Scrambler rifle and the Assault rifle with the scope thingy. I only used the starter fits. Till now I look back and say " Wow I can't believe how much of a idiot I was back then." xD lol

I joined my first match and shot at the blues and thought I was a red... I learnt after dying 3 times to different reds...
I jumped from the MMC and landed on a Bolas... I sat on that thing until it killed me...
I thought I could Kamikaze with a Locus in my hand...
I danced with a red with the old melee (Like an old machete... for those who never saw it...)
I thought the SR could be used in CQC... this one was amazing because I managed to use it in CQC for several updates
I thought melee with the NKs was insta kill...
I died a shiteton...

When I first started playing, I was like, "hmm, a skill tree. I have some role playing experience and know all about those. The whole infantry game seems to be based on these dropsuits, so I'll just spec Dropsuit Command up to level 5."
That was before I knew that CCP created scads of completely pointless skills.

That is the dumbest, most awesome one I've heard.
I used to think that when someone was getting repped they were creating a yellow electrical charge weapon and I would run away from them. I couldn't understand how I was getting killed so easy "inside" a turret installation and I kept looking for the window on them so I could kill the guy inside.

Did the "shoot the MCC with turrets thing". Did the "jump from MCC go Splat thing" Did the "how did I die while I'm on a turret thing."
I also ran exclusively proto Caldari Logi because "I skilled proto, I have to run proto" so I was always broke. The kicker; I did it while running with nothing but a Sniper rifle and decked out with drop uplinks, and nanohives, using 5 damage mods (Those penalties can't be THAT bad, right). The more damage the better. I would run into the hills, drop my uplink and nanohive (right next to me, out in the open, like a homing beacon for the world). So I'm by myself, in a suit with no sidearm, no shields, and a Sniper rifle. Oh, and I had put on basic armor plates (because why not, right?) so I'm slow as molasses.
I couldn't figure out why people kept finding me. I couldn't figure out how I could never outrun any of them. Then I couldn't figure out why they kept killing me so quickly.
So I figured, I'll go into Combat Rifle. Get up close. I didn't change any of my mods or my suit, so I am running around in a proto logi suit with basically no extra HP trying to be a slayer/bad ass and I would get my ass handed to me on a silver platter by everyone.

Note: This was before the advent of Proto Fits or any other online database for dust stuffs.

I used to run all the way to a Supply Depot to call out an LAV, and it took me about 2 weeks to realize that I could simply press a button to have the Deployment Menu appear.
That, and for a month I didn't realize that I needed Shield Extenders and Armor Plates if I wanted to survive longer, so I would always run my Matari Logi with Base HP. Then there's the reason why I went with the Logi. I had mistook the Equipment for Light Weapons, and though that it had 3LWs instead of EQs.

This was my initial reaction but I could put myself in that head-space so I kinda get it... And the confluence of his unallocated SP realization with Fanfest14 seemed like a notable catch 22 type situation since it seemed like DUST 514 was in its death throes at the time so his finally using the 20M wasn't going to grant him the value he may have gotten by using it all along... Earned him a sympahty Like from me...
I hope he has spent or at least plans to spend the 6 million he earned since that time...
EDIT: Other than above, I have done everything else cited in this thread! Funny recollecting what a dumazz I was/am...

Back when I first started, I didn't know what 'AV' stranded for, so when I first used the AV grenade I was perplexed that it did no damage to red berries. So then I thought to myself "These must be extremely high skill weapons" and proceded to try hit enemies with AV grenades directly, and after many failed attempts, I finialy hit an enemy with one, and to my surprise it still did no damage. So I continued, and I think on the same match, to try hit people with one, then, with a enemy LAV very close by, I tried to hit another enemy with one, then, low and behold, the dam grenade flew and hit the LAV, and with this, my peanut sized brain managed to discover that 'AV' standed for Anti-Vehicle.

After wobbling into the air I decided to attempt to fly forward. Put the nose down slightly and began picking up speed, I leveled off and was quite happy I had managed to get as far as that. The problems started to occur when I noticed I was flying directly at a mountain. Panic set in as i attempted to turn my craft but only managed to roll it and loose more altitude. Eventually I just pulled back on the stick and avoided the mountain, that's when I stalled, I rolled left and found out how to swing my nose around just in time to see the building I was flying into. Good times.
I feel I did better than most though, I didn't hit the mountain!

My first time was great! Really smooth too! You'd think I was a trained pilots.
After the update however... I couldn't lift off the ground without crashing into 20 different objects...

I used them to scare people when I got smart about them. People would jut see a grenade coming their way and would lean back while I ran off or continued attacking them.

I didn't listen to the lady voice of the eta of my vehicle arriving and usually just wandered off assuming it wouldn't come.
Then there was the 1st time I bought a injector and rep tool. I thought the rep tool WAS the laser rifle because I didnt read, and witnessing my partner revive a teammate that died on top of a enemy, I kinda thought he brought a enemy to life as an ally, so I ran over to dead enemies and tried to revive them

I skilled into sniper rifles to get the charge sniper rifle. I equipped it on a militia caldari medium frame with, of course, nothing but militia mods. Even worse, I tried shooting people point blank or short range in general. It didn't end well.
When I gained more knowledge on the game, I ran an advanced caldari medium frame with advanced modules, (A big step up, if I do say so myself.) an advanced weapon, and advanced nova knives. I tried focusing more on my nova knives for kills, and thinking back on it, it didn't go as bad as I think it would now. Maybe I should try that again. Yea, I'll do that again.

Thinking Proto meant heavy because I didn't know better. Along with that, I didn't know what proto, advanced, and basic meant so I just assumed everything was fair and equal. When I got proto-stomped repeatedly, I thought I sucked at the game. Nope, it's just like an RPG MMO where my level 5 arse was trying to kill a level 99.
Using a medium basic suit and wasting millions of ISK until I finally specialized and went Logibro and Assault.
Try to fly dropships thinking that tilting the camera foward meant tilting the nose foward. |

In my first match I got to a supply depot and didn't know what it was and though I was getting skill points or Kills assist with that weapon when the numbers were popping up next to the gun.
I figured the game had latency issues and was just now catching up to all the work I just did taking the Objective.
CCP holds the Caldari's hand so this doesn't happen again.

At one time the ground installations would do damage to the MCC.. Can't wait until that feature is put back into the game.

Back in the old days I was in a corp called "tritan industries" we had a corp battle against the IMpS only reason we won was because my self and another tanker sat at our red line and shelled the MCC for the entire match and killed it. (If your wondering you got +800 for the kill and +400 for a direct assist of memory serves)

Tried out the scrambler (sounded like the hottest thing), only to realize it looked nothing like an assault rifle (I thought it'd have the same skin as the Gallente varint) and was semi-auto, not full-auto. Survived against a Sentinel despite ****ing up with it.
Give the Magsex some love.

I'll list them from worst to... not as worse but still bad.
- Joined a ****** corp run by a closed beta vet with like 10 members, and thought it was a GOOD corp...
- Thought I had to skill into Starter Fits, so I chose Minmatar Logi. Yes the ****** old one with no rep tool.
- When the AR was nerfed, continued to skill it up anyway. Also when I learned about my above mistake I still continued to skill up the old school hacker logi which was as squishy as a scout almost with an underpowered AR. It didn't work out well.
- Refused to run equipment on my Logi, trying to run it as a slayer. Looked like an idiot for a while.
- Ran the above fitting in PC matches.
- Wasn't so sure about wanting to spend money on Dust, so I bought the $20 pack first, then the $50. Deeply regretted not just going for the $100 Dren pack.
- I went the longest time without realizing I felt obligated to use the Assault Scrambler Pistol as a sidearm with my AR because I wasted SP on going to level 3 in it... and it turned out it was the basic level 1, not the level 3. So I forced myself to run it for months on my Dragonfly for no good reason.
I'm sure I made some worse mistakes, but can't remember.
F*k this cash grab fix the shit that matters: unkillable uplinks, invisible remotes on null cannon hack panels, etc.
