Legion is CCP shaking the Etch-a-Sketch picture and trying again on a different 'canvas.' You don't then go back to the Etch-a-Sketch if you manage to pull it off on something else. That is insanity.
pretty much. Dust was in devlopment starting in around 2009, there was videos of it shortly after apocacryto came out. The idea at the time, was to expand CCP's protfolio, they were making WoD, Dust, and had eve.
The summer of rage caused them to shift all hands to eve. WoD suffered, Dust suffered. Then when things stablized people went back to their projects.
CCP said 'welp, dust is nearly done, lets just finish it. Then we can focus on WoD and eve.' So they started doing that. Then came the rift, and a small team of five devs decided to make a demo for that. Which was so popular, CCP decided to make it a game,
CCP was looking to expand into other markets, Dust was coming, they made a mobile divison to make games, and they had WoD cooking. And now Valk was starting to be made. Dust was released, and it either:
1) Failed t make as much money as they hoped
2) made money just fine but had other techical roadblocks
3) a combination.
So CCP took a look and said 'you know, this is not working...' They had EVE bringing in money, Dust was making money but was not what they wanted it to be, Valkaryie was going to be on PC, WoD was stuck in devlopment hell, and there was nothing coming for mobile (that we are aware) So sometime after eve vegas i;d say, maybe just before, they started work on legion. (i think it was before the winter CSM meeting, because there was roumers of ccp's 5th project, which i am 90% sure was legion, unless we have another game we dunno know exist yet being made) They decided it was in the companies best interest to unfity all there eve stuff into one platform and focus on what they know.
You toss in competition from destiny, SC, E:D, and others and you can clearly see why ccp had to shift focus.
My guess is, eventually Legion, Valk, and EVE will be one game. Then hey might decide to port to ps4/5 or do soemthing else. But from a business standpoint it makes sense. When they made all the announcements in 2013 they had not yet deployed dust fully. Once it was deployed i am sure technical limitiations and what they had in mind down the road helped change there views.
And before anyone calls out the 'Laser focused' comment from eve vegs 2013, listen to the ENTIRE QUOTE: "We are laser focused on Dust 514.... for the foreseeable future' In business speak the 'foreseeable future' means the end of this quarter. That last bit is important. |
