Does anyone have this game on the PSP, or the PS Vita download version of it? I'm getting started in that game and I'm wondering if anyone would like to join up with me for a few hunts, and possibly help give me tips.
I usually use a gunlance, knives, a lance, or a bow. I'm willing to use anything but long swords, hammers, and great swords.

I have it! I've sunk a ridiculous amount of time into it as well, although I'm truly awful at it.
Unfortunately, you've named my preferred weapons as the weapons you don't want to use. :X

Honestly, I've checked each of those weapons over one more time and found that the only ones I can't really use in combat would be the Great swords.
I've actually gotten some things figured out by reading all of the in-game information provided about each weapon.
Even still, I'd bet that you're still better than me.
What rank of quests are open to you?

Is it possible to get MHFU to work over online without a wii or some other program that simulates local connections?

Is it local/ad hoc only? It appears to be online like any other PSP game that offers the function. If it is local network only then it would probably be possible to connect the the PSP/Vita to a computer and use Hamachi, since this simulates the systems being on the same network. If it is not local connection, but ad hoc, it could be more complicated...

I've never actually gone online with mine - I've always soloed - but I hear there's some trickery to be done with the XLink Kai to do it properly.
I'd have to look it up.
Anyhow, I'm primarily a greatsword user and I can do 7 star guild hall quests. I've done all the village quests and managed the final challenges + Fatalis though so my gear's possibly a little better, I haven't played in a while so I don't know off the top of my head.

Heh, there's no doubt that your equipment is better than mine. I've only got the 2 star village elder quests, and and 3 star guild quests. It's probably just because I have spent a lot of time on it.
The gunlance has fallen off of my list of favorites due to how much time you have spend to just sitting there blocking and waiting for a good opportunity to drop your guard and hit with a big combo of stabs and shells. I've also taken more of a liking to the light bowgun. The bow and the hunting horn are my favorites, but I do like to vary it up with just about everything.
Do you have God Eater: Burst? That would be another good game to play online if possible, and some people have claimed that it copied Monster Hunter.

I'm afraid I don't have that game, no.
Bowguns are neat little things. I've never really been able to get used to the regular bow for some reason, so they've always been my weapons of choice for ranged work. HBGs are particularly useful for defence missions - it's difficult to take on the giant monsters with melee weapons if you don't have quake resistance, and sometimes even then it's a pain.
I can help boost you up the guild hall quests if we can figure out the online.

The Bow takes some special tactics, and is usually only used by experienced players (which makes it weird that I find it so much easier to use--I am by no stretch good at this game). I'd appreciate the help if we can this working.
If you like MH than maybe you should try picking up GE:B or wait a year and get God Eater 2 (Rage Burst) when it is released. It has a few similar things, but the main differences are in movement, defense, the fact that your weapon can transform between a gun and a blade, and the burst function--which allows you to use a "devour" attack which has to be charged up at close range and will boost your attack power as well as giving you some special bullet types, a double jump, bigger dodges, and the devour attack itself does quite a bit of damage. (Sorry for the run-on sentence)
GE:B has a smaller weapon type variety (compared to MH), while GE 2 (RB) is looking like it has quite a good variety of weapon types (about 6 guns and about 6 melee). Also, if you live in Asia, GE 2 might already be available to you, if you don't live in Asia you could try and buy an import copy.

I cannot use Xlink Kai due to the need for a windows only plugin, and all players who try to connect must be using the same program, so we both would have to use adhoc Party.
adhoc Party can be found on playstation network, in certain regions.
Adhoc party requires that your PS3 is connected to either a PC or a wireless router via an ethernet cable.
If need be, I can try to run Xlink Kai on my brother's computer.

Xlink Kai is cool, I'll just have to find my PSP again and then we can find a time that works for both of us.
On the bow being suited for 'experienced players' - Honestly, MH is built so that there's a very high skill ceiling. All weapons can become vastly better with experience - it's one of the things that helped me keep at it so long. There is little quite so satisfying as a perfectly timed GS full charged strike on a weak point in the middle of a furious combat.

Of course all of the weapons get much more effective in skilled hands. I was kind of just quoting the wiki when I said "experienced players", like I said, I believe myself to be nowhere near good at the game.
An interesting thing that I learned from the wiki is that the bow actually has a much shorter optimal range than I previously thought, it's not actually much further than the melee range of most monsters. As the wiki says "if the arrow has started to fall before hitting the target, you aren't doing full damage."
I personally couldn't get used to the stationary charge attack of the GS, which is one of the main reasons I don't use it. I've always favored more mobile play-styles. If not a mobile role I usually play more of a support or distance role. I've mainly just found that I'm more effective using the bow.
I'm really just not good at melee in general. I feel like melee is really where there is more skill, as there are more things to learn to be good with melee.
The HH is an interesting weapon to play with, especially with it's more powerful attacks being while it is in recital mode.
I think the main reason I like the HH and the GL is because they are just very unique weapons.
Also, I've been wondering, what is the duel thing in your sig about?

This is exactly how I started out. I took out my first kut ku with a HBG because I was a ranged man. I never went close to engage. Then I started using the LS, and as time went on I realised that if you figured out the timings you could be so much more lethal in close quarters. Then I reached the point where I thought I was becoming decent and realised that if it was all about timing, there was little reason that a slow GS user would be unable to cope with targets and so I switched to that.
When you master the timing on a GS, you feel like a god. I felt I reached the point where I could call myself genuinely good with it when I twigged the GS on my first nargacuge kill. The nargacuga destroyed me on my first couple of outings - I was hideously undergeared until I realised that honestly it shouldn't matter.
I pulled out a GS. I entered zen mode. And I cleared a perfect run on my first nargacuga kill without getting hit once. There are very few achievements in gaming that I've managed that have come close to the feeling of that.
I enjoy challenges because of MHFU, I think.
Quote: Also, I've been wondering, what is the duel thing in your sig about?
Some time ago, Rattati commented that the Quafe suits were 'too pink', so I said 'i swear on me mum ill rek u m8' if he nerfed the pinkness. Then he did, and, enraged, I challenged him to a duel.
I am pleased to report success in this venture, so I have since changed my sig.
You have long since made your choice. What you make now is a mistake.
Glorious pink victory has been achieved.

The main thing about melee in this game is that you really have to learn monster patterns. There should be some greatsword charge guides on youtube for various monsters. There should also be some hammer guides too.
If I were to recommend *any* weapon it would be sword and shield as if you learn how to stick to monsters and keep hitting them constantly without getting hit back it's one of the craziest weapons in the game though it lacks the reach of stuff like the longsword, lance or greatsword or the knockout power of the hammer.

I love Monster Hunter and I played quite a bit with friends and random folks online. I never liked X-link Kai, had too many issues with it. If you have a ps3 with a wired connection I suggest using Adhoc Party on PS3. I'm not sure if Sony still supports it, but I found that the best way to play with others over the net. Anyways, happy hunting!

I've never actually connected online, just locally. I'm still looking to group up with anyone who feels like it.
