You both miss the point. The point is not that it teaches a specific skill so much as it develops cognitive processes responsible for those skills, thereby enhancing similar skills.
Don't let me interrupt your Blizzard hatefest, though.

This is presumably because you are spending your time on these aforementioned video games rather than studying.
Pro-tip: Get off the forums.
You have long since made your choice. What you make now is a mistake.

The study participants are being asked to do a very specific perceptual task (Gabor plane shifting in a "noisy' visual environment). The authors are not making the assertion that action-gamers are better at domain general learning. Rather, the action-gamers (or those trained with action games) are better at learning how to do this particular perceptual task, likely as a result of training in somewhat related tasks involved with action video game experience. Basically, action-gamers are better at parsing information in noisy visual environments, better at orienting actions in said environments and better at optimizing (implicit) strategies to do these tasks. The title of the news article is misleading and the author exaggerates the scope of the what the PNAS paper terms learning.

I actually am acquainted with someone who got a relatively cushy job because he listed 5+ years of being a guildleader of a raiding guild in wow among his other skills and experience. It wasn't the sole deciding factor but soft skills like that can be an extreme asset.

If there was a fun chemistry game that engaged players and taught them the basics and then continually reinforced those skills by repetition and rewards I would be my job that you would make an A.
I made a similar argument about video games in a psychology class where the professor started giving her views on how and why video games cause people to be violent. Games don't cause violence just like they don't make you any smarter. Games desensitize us to violence and hone skills. Many of those skills are useless in everyday life but governments and company's don't train people in simulators and with games because it is fun for them.
