I enjoy DUST 514 but at the same time understand I am in a small group to which the game appeals.
No other game extracts such rage from me but the flip side of the "coin of DUST" is the sheer fulfillment I get when I do well. It took me weeks if not months to be competitive and I still, after these many months, feel I am good but not great. Yet here I am.
Having said that, it speaks to the failure of CCP's endeavor. There is no white washing it. DUST is a free to play game on a console that is in the hands of tens of millions of end users.
Yet, DUST has always struggled to maintain a workable player count.
For those that were here from the beginning, they speak of bitter vets and cliche BS. Those that joined the Fraternity later and had to endure the hazing of the noob beat down that lasts for months, understand why new players aren't retained.
The fact that the idea of other potential modes which divide the player count into even smaller increments precludes us from having a better NPE only highlights the failure of DUST 514 as a CCP business money making venture.

We all have been put through said 'hazing' once or twice at least, I myself have been put through it 27 time now and I have been here from the start!
Nope.
The undeniable truth is that players who joined after beta have more blood in the game. The hazing makes us indoctrinated to DUST in a way Closed beta vets do not understand.
If you were here from the beginning, you started on the same level as everyone else. Only by starting with an alt can someone like that begin to understand. And even then it's not the same because you have in game knowledge.
