We did change but both are used everywhere and both are used for various things, I liken it to the American English language change.
Noah Webster tried to simplify (dumb down in my eyes) the English language in America and 5 generations were taught his tosh. In the end, it was cast off as crap as his new loledition saw words like 'tongue' spelt as 'tung'. Regardless, you guys still use a lot of it as although a lot of it is simply no better than engwish, you guys still use the changes that are easier and make sense.

We use both relative to different measurements.
I also liken it to how us English swear a fair bit and don't talk properly (common speak), but when in a professional environment or engaging in serious matters, you'd think we were born with a silver spoon lodged betwix thine buttocks good sir.

Being in a science major, I only use English units when I'm forced to. The only unit I have trouble conceptualizing is Km/h. Damn cars.
We use Mph with cars. Its Europeans and southern Ireland who use kph.
