Learning to run the **** away. Took me long enough. Been messing around with my 'Sever' scout put some cheap gear on, and tried and failed at being OP. Had MLT CR & MLT SMG on and wasnt basically only killing weakened targets or fragile scouts. I got my rapid reload to three and didnt realize it affected my militia gear. Good to know.
Anyway, for example i saw a target on my TAC, thought, 'Ok right as he turns this corner im gonna jump out spray him with SMG' *jumps out and sees its a sentinel with a BFG* 'BAD IDEA MAN!!! RUNRUNRUNRUNRUN BAD IDEA WORST IDEA EVER WORST IDEA EVER!!!' Before, i would have stood there and tried to kill him. Training myself out of that unless, its from a flank, hes NOT looking at me, and hes super weak AND i have some potential helpful blues wether they shoot him or serve as meat shields while i run away. I avoided lots of deaths.
I still died seven times with nine kills so its obviously a work in progress. It was fun though, i ran away from a Mk.0 assault and he chased me lol. So if you see me running away dont hate me im just performing a tactical retreat because im squishy, and engaging anything i cant surprise is very bad. And i have the most dangerous job ever. Uplink duty and speed hacking.
Those two jobs get me shot. Or causing me to retreat before i can set links and hack some things which sucks.

Especially when I have a team that is worth something and is defending at least one objective or otherwise occupying the enemy.

The "see target" and "engage and kill target" that was beaten into me for almost a decade in Battlefield is hard to overcome. I feel the same way. I don't beat myself up about it too much though - we've been through so many incarnations of heavies and weapons i don't even know what i'm shooting anymore. Or with what i'm shooting it. So many reflexes formed over so many incarnations of DUST that i've lost track of which set of reflexes to pull out when there's no time to think.
It's all become a giant bowl of mushed-together game-design porridge. I feel like a punch-drunk fighter just trying to land a good one through the haze before the lights go out forever.
I pray to the Minmatar gods that we stabilize our game design a good few months before the plug gets pulled on DUST.

There is no shame in running away/passing up engagement opportunies. Ever spend in entire match observing players & avoiding battles? You can learn alot.
There was a dev blog about map design & objective placement. It really made me think about the capacity for range vs engagement. In domination, for instance, if scouts on opposing teams with equal skills run toward the same objective they should both arrive about the same time. Take this into account & start relating it to other suits/roles/capabilities. Draw some conclusions about what you should see & where you should see it, then go & watch to see if you are right.
Have you considered a career in costumed aggression?

Dying less happens as a natural progression and so does slaying, it requires finesse and confidence. The longer you play and the more confidence you gain , bodies pile up naturally higher just because you being you, not trying to be as good as any other player, once you become you in the battle field and it shows that you've developed a signature style thats when the bodies will pile up because your comfortable. And you make the enemies play and do what you want them to do.
Example:
I ll pick a narrow spot put remotes in it, cloak up enter the room or area beside it, shoot frantically like im surprised and run back out, they chase and KABOOM!
works every time. So start setting traps
DONT EVER COMPLAIN, USE CAPS LOCK OR POINT OUT WHAT BROKEN WITH OUR GAME OR WE WILL DEFINITELY BAN YOUR ASS FOR 6 MONTHS

I don't like giVing up because the dude has a Bunch of hp and could possibly mow me down. I'll stand and fight and if he kills me, good for him, if I kill him, I'll continue to do that until I find someone Competent enough to kill me. My mentality is, if it walks, I have a chance at slaughtering it, no matter what advantages it may have over me or how low hp I am. I will fight. (Mostly because I trade the cloak for 500+ hp on my assault-scout fits and 2 basic or enhanced plates weigh me down a bit, so running away is not an option

Step 1: Encounter proto scout and attempt to engage in combat. Step 2: There is no step 2, you're dead, m8. :P

Mmm, the usual suspect of the 'stand your ground' habit is the fact that most engagements won't allow you the liberty to escape without a considerable amount of lead in yer back.
That said, if you're a seasoned scout, you'd already be planning escape routes before even engaging, or at least that's what I do. What strikes amateurs and veterans alike, like Parkour mentioned, is ambushing a lone red dot around a corner, only to find that it's a Proto Sentinel. Can't rely on Tacnet for everything.
