Being able to use prototype turrets and dealing the most amount of damage is great but there are certain mechanics that operating small turrets on the dropship should be understood. Here I will cover the important things as to when to shoot your turret(s, how to shoot your turrets, what to shoot at, and How. These rules cover any type of turret so I will not focus on one variant but all types.
What am I Shooting at?
PIlot: If you are flying an Assault dropship make certain you are shooting at something that can easily shoot back at you. The best weapon the Assault Dropship has is it's surprise attack from above. When done right the enemy has little time to react or has to first locate where you are in the sky, giving you valuable time to continue shooting at your target.
Turret Gunner: If you are the prime gunner or the secondary on an ADS, it is critical you know what to shoot at. Immediate threats are the most important. What are immediate threats? These are enemies or vehicles that are directly near the dropship. If your pilot is situational aware, they will fly you directly at what they see needs to be attacked first. If the pilot looks at let's say an HAV that does not see the dropship on the field but did not notice the AV that has the two of you marked for death, It is your job to tell the pilot that the AV user is more important to the dropships survival, than adding a tank kill.
How am I Shooting?
PIlot: As the pilot you are choosing the angle of your attack. If you are using an assault dropship you have a much better range of angles from almost a complete 360-¦ sphere. You should always avoid attacking anything head on. Play the dropships strength of multiple angles of attack to your advantage. Certain vehicles can not shoot directly up, or turn quickly. Eliminating AV users should always be approached with a plan if possible. ***YOUR ENGAGEMENT PLAN SHOULD BE WHAT ANGLES IS THE A/V USER AVAILABLE TO ME AT AND DO I NEED TO ENGAGE THEM***
Turret Gunner: As the gunner your job is to make sure your pilot understands the information above and gives you good angles. If you need the pilot to hold the dropship still for a moment then request it. But remember good shooting is best done while the dropship is in movement.
When do I Shoot?
PIlot: You should only shoot when the above questions have been answered.
Turret Gunner: Your goal here is to hold your fire until the dropship pilot is ready for you to shoot. Too often new and old pilots are shot down because the gunner on the turret is shooting at everything that moves. Remember the more things you shoot at the more attention you are bringing towards the dropship. You want to go unnoticed as much as possible.
