The overview map (typically accessed with the 'Down' D-Pad arrow) is a tool that most tankers should already find extremely helpful, mainly because they can see other tankers rolling around and plan their route to intercept and destroy.
Infantry could also benefit from this tactical bird's eye view, ground commanders in PC and squad leaders (for issuing orders) especially. However the cumbersome loading time for one is a massive deterrent.
For discussion, then: should the overview map be streamlined so that it is able to be brought up near instantaneously, until it is a tool that infantry can use in the middle of battle to plot their next move? And what can be considered 'clutter' on the current overview map, that could be removed to improve performance?
I'll hold my thoughts to myself for now, but unless someone has a strong argument against optimising the map, I'm going to try keep the thread going.

I have to admit, having a slick overview, streamlined map directly attached to the down arrow would be amazingly good.
On the other hand, the reasoning behind the overview map is a satellite feed. It doesn't "detect" tanks for you, it let's you see what the satelite sees. If you streamline it, you would have an "Icon" for the Tank and it would become obvious. You might think, "It's already obvious !" and you'd be right, but lots of other things are only truly noticeable if you pay very close attention and would be somewhat too obvious in a streamlined map. Little specs of dust moving around a "seemingly" safe uplink is a good example.
I would be all for a speedy load-less map, available on the down arrow, but I fear how much intel a streamlined version would convey. The Ideal would just be to somehow speed up the process that takes us to the current overview map, or one that is very similar and based on photography and not radar or otherwise. |

Some sacrifices in detail may have to be incurred for sure but I think it deserves more than the pitiful usage it is getting now. It's a very powerful tool in the right hands but it's too cumbersome at the moment. I'd say do whatever it takes to make it easier to load up, then start adding back details slowly if they are even necessary.
Also another idea added to the original post denoted by the "EDIT". Both these ideas probably need a patch to be implemented though, so I guess we'll be holding our breath for a while.
