Should legion just come out already for pre-alpha testing. I don't think anyone would give two hoots if the only thing you had was one map and no guns... It would just be great to be part of actual testing while it's being made and give pointers to where the game needs work

No, because then you'd risk making a bad first impression.

Got to agree with attim the only people seeing alpha should be careful chosen testers who fully understand their not there to play a game to be part of a development process of building up to full game.
Dust proved people don't get what alphas and betas are they make judgement right off bat of what they see first.

They could easily do something similar to what soe is doing with everquest next where they have players buy access to the alpha just to make sure they aren't there to just badmouth the game that isn't finished. Ccp will probably let dust players in early, but it might not be early enough to give feedback on glaring problems and needed content before release day. The same thing happened for dust where the alpha is almost a completely different game.
Ccp has a lot of feedback already from dust and the mediocre reviews they got, so it would be pretty bad if they managed to dropped the ball again. If they announce a greenlight at vegas it would be nice to get some of idea of when an alpha will be available. |

The problem with this concept is that it failed when the same thing was done to Dust. People spent money for early access but had little to no concept of what it meant to be part of the early closed beta testing. Money therefore doesn't guarantee quality testers. There were also players who constantly -- and intentionally -- violated the NDA (after the fact) regarding Dust videos from closed beta testing. Some of these violators claimed they were just helping with the game's advertisement or just like to help CCP get better criticism from a broader audience. Unfortunately that wasn't true. Almost every video that went on YouTube had a ton of comments from ignorant players who kept thinking this was an actual "finished product" at the time of closed beta testing. Of course, content was later added along with other features, but the damage to the PR was too much. People already made up their minds on a game they never even tried. To top it all off, most of the NDA-breaking videos on YouTube were extremely biased and didn't show all the information that could have helped the players make an informed decision.
From this point on, CCP really needs to be extra careful on who they let in even for closed beta. They can't just simply pick a player from Dust at random and hope they don't break the NDA this time. And clearly payment for early access failed to filter out any NDA breakers out there. CCP might choose from the list of volunteers as seen on this list but a vetting process is still necessary to ensure they get quality testers.

Agree testers need to be vetted and trusted for alpha and beta stages. I don't even care if I don't get chosen as long as the people who are. Are good solid testers that won't throw a hissy fit every time somthing doesn't work
