The zoom issues were mostly standardized because they made people with higher zoom factors nearly invincible to snipers with lower zoom levels. Namely, that a Thale's could be completely invisible to every player on the field, but see everyone else clear as day. Having different zoom levels between tiers was a bad thing, and should never have happened, particularly with DUST's draw distance issues.
I think they should all be proto level zoom now except the tactical? Which means that the zoom on most snipers should've been buffed actually, not nerfed. The only one that would've been nerfed was the Thale's, which would be because it was broken as heck.

It is a software issue (mostly), but this is better game design anyways, and is doable in a hotfix. Too many things varied from tier to tier of items to balance smoothly. And zoom level has a huge and largely unintended impact on enabling invisible redline sniping.
Chromosome's graphics engine was a bit different, maps had a tendency to be smaller (see the old Manus Peaks version from Chromosome). Also, sniping was horrifically overpowered in Chromosome. (I know because I was a sniper in Chromosome, and it was OP as heck.)
And if I understand the zoom factor stat correctly, the only one that really was nerfed was the Thale's.

Yes, the sniper rifle was OP in Chromosome. It was very hard to do worse than 20/0 with a sniper rifle in Chromosome.

That was definitely the fun part. ;) I loved killing other snipers.
