In the Delta numbers thread, Rattati responded to me with this:
CCP Rattati wrote:Alena Ventrallis wrote:Where was discussion on such a huge Nerf to ADS ROF? The decision was mine and mine alone, a 50% increase in DPS is unprecedented progression of damage in the game, and makes it impossible to balance. I decided to rip the band aid off and we don't need a full named hotfix to inject one or two remedies afterwards. And just to iterate, based on all data and experience, the ADS is far too powerful. It is a huge force multiplier and it does everything well, it transports infantry and uplinks. decimates infantry and vehicles, intercepts RDVs and vehicle delivery, avoids swarms with ease. The only counter is a mass team shift to AV, and forges, and by then the rest of the ADS team has gone full anti-infantry. Even if you, by some off chance, take it down, the pilot ejects, runs behind a hill and calls in another one. I see that the discussion has swayed from, "it's not OP", to "we all knew and admitted it was OP but this is too much". We will monitor the situation, and if ADS performance stats plummet below an acceptable threshold, our response will be immediate, not based on a hotfix schedule. For now, let's see what happens. Don't forget that Turret damage profiles have also changed in Delta.
To me, this tells of not having a role for the ADS to fill. Or for that matter, a role for any vehicle to fill. So I ask Rattati; what exactly are we vehicle pilots to do? What is our job? What is our role on the battlefield?
I will focus on the ADS here, since that is the most recent one to be nerfed 3 times in one go. What do you see the ADS doing? Personally, I see it as giving up it's transport for full on offense. lose the seats and focus solely on doing damage with the front turret. But we can talk about my idea for it in a different thread. For this one, what is my job as an ADS pilot supposed to be?

I don't think vehicles have a designed role in DUST. I don't think they ever did. Vehicles for transport purposes is a unique role, that fits well into the game balance. But the functional use of vehicles for slayer use has never really jived properly. I'm unsure there's anything to be done about that at this point, other than preventing them from being horribly OP.
I think CCP needs to take a long hard look at the roles each and every vehicle class is supposed to play in the larger game balance when it comes time to design for Legion.

With TTK being what it is, there's not real room for an ADS to fly somewhere and evacuate a group of people. Plus, they can only fit 2 passengers without gimping their fitting. It's really impractical, unless, of course, there was some kind of equipment that could make it easier.
Really the role of the ADS should be fast attack close-air support. Fly in and drop a few infantry and support them from the sky. Get 2 ADSs and you can field a whole squad.

Tanks, less so, but we can have them fill roles nicely. For instance, we can have them able to look upwards higher to function as anti-air. It's not perfect, but we can give everything a role on the battlefield.

That would be a great buff for tanks.

It delivers two cloaky scouts or HMG sentinels alongside a vulnerable enemy position then they wreak havoc. The ADS is also great for harrying the enemy while a fire team pushes on the ground. ADS are great for rapid objective response in skirmishes; bravo is being hacked, fly over to bravo, drop a squadmate to the ground while the ADS harasses the hacker.

Really it just comes to a need for everything to be able to counter. Tanks are a little too weak at targeting the aerial vehicles that can devastate them. Even with an angle increase for tank turrets, it'd still be possible for dropships to outmaneuver them, since the dropship can move back and forth over the tank, forcing the tank turret to need to rotate fully as well.

Even so, this is getting into general vehicle roles, I want to focus on the ADS and hear it from Rattati himself what he envisions it doing. We cannot begin to brainstorm ideas if we have no clue what we want it to end up doing.
