If you will permit, here's my take on the issue, from a different angle:
There's a concept in the game dev industry called "Intrinsic Value vs Extrinsic Value".
Most games only have Intrinsic Value. Fun to play, but there's little meaning to your actions.
A very, very small amount of games are the reverse, only having Extrinsic Value. EVE is the key example here; your actions have tons of meaning, but the moment-to-moment gameplay is terrible.
The thing is, even though videogames have existed for 50 years without us ever seeing a game that offers both of these values at the same time, there is nothing in the reasoning saying that such a game could not exist. On paper, the perfect-hybrid should be possible.
Now note this: The game Dust was trying to be, the game promised in the trailers, the game Legion is reaching toward, would be that perfect-hybrid!
A game that is both fun to play and where your actions shape the galaxy. A game with both deep Intrinsic and Extrinsic Value.
Or to put it another way: the Holy Grail of game dev!
Dust was broken at launch, took a year+ to become stable and balanced, and even now is feature incomplete and most of our dear friends have left. The reason I've stayed with Dust through all of that is this: If Dust/Legion ever becomes feature complete, it will be a singular experience. Where every bullet you fire will carry consequences that will be felt for years down the line.
It would be one of the greatest pieces of interactive entertainment ever made. And the Industry would never be the same again.
...now if Hilmar would just green-light the thing, and Rouge were to deliver on "actions having meaning"... |

I think if Legion development continues we will get there. ...Eventually. The real question is, is someone else going to get there first? There are already several games working in this space right now. Even though Destiny isn't trying to be that game, they are only one or two feature upgrades away from bumbling into it.
There is zero doubt in my mind we will see that holy grail game appear sometime in the next few years. The only question for me is who's climbing that mountain first? |
