I just started a new alt the other day, and I couldn't agree more. The starting tutorial is so simplistic it's almost useless. It doesn't explain weapon types, suit types, skill trees, market place, matchmaking, fitting requirements, squad finder, or even corporations with any useful amount of detail. There's no transition between the academy and matchmaking, its "Hey, learned the controls? Good, have fun out there! Try not to get shot!". Along with that, it doesn't even tell you when you're leaving the academy. The only way you know is when you start off the match and get smacked in the face with a BHMG. I got three matches in the academy. Granted, I was 40+/3 for these matches, but that still didn't give me any time to build up enough enough SP and isk for standard matchmaking games.
Want to join a corporation? Good luck finding one, let alone one that is actually accepting of new players. Want to join a chat channel? Again, good luck. Unless they take the extra effort to do research on a PC, they'll be alone in the dark until some random friendly player tries to pick them up.
Think I'm asking for too much? Look at Eve. The tutorials can last for about a week, going over everything you might use and need to know about in the game. Then, there is an open corp page where you can see what corps are actually recruiting new players. You also start off with a new players help chat channel, for those odd questions. Still not understanding Eve? It's ok, because you're in High Sec space, so you can't get destroyed right away and you can fight as many NPCs as you want. If you try and leave high sec, they'll let you know that its dangerous out there and advise that you don't unless you're ready. Why do you have this much invested into the new Eve players, but our new Dust players are thrown to the wolves as soon as they can walk? If I was a new casual player, interested in dust because it was a FTP shooter, I would give it a day and move on with the way new players are integrated.

Not even that. Just extend the academy, have levels in the academy you move up through, give them a couple militia sets of their races three suit types, give them a set of every type of militia weapons to try out, and actually explain ****. |

So as the experienced player base for this game, what can we do to help fix this? I know we really don't have any power as far as game design, but there has to be something we can do.
Quote:i think newbies who are under 5m or 10m SP should get a 3x multiplier to Sp gains and bonus sp amount till they are 5m or 10m SP that way they can be somewhat competent when it comes to fighting against proto stompers.
I like the idea of giving new players an SP boost per match up to 5 mil life time skill points, 10 mil is a little too much. I don't even have 10 mil and I can hold my own in most battles.
CCP, feel free to chime in at any point. We are willing to help and do the grunt work, you're just the key figure in this whole situation. |
