Open world shooters are a BAD thing. There has never been one that captured an audience successfully, and there are very good reasons for that. Especially as they try to emulate typical MMO PvE behavior of "bullshit spawns in this area, AI is idiotic, farm rinse repeat".
Nobody playing an FPS is looking for that kind of brain dead activity and it's why everybody is getting sick of Destiny in a hurry. The idea of CCP's sandbox areas is just going to fall into the same trap Destiny did, only with a lower budget so it will actually look and feel even worse than Destiny did.
If anything is going to be open world, it needs to be station/ship environments. That can actually be made relevant and can be managed across all three game clients. This whole wandering around a bullshit barren planet picking up junk metal while really stupid robots try to shoot at you wasn't fun in Destiny and it won't be fun in Legion either. It's completely typical aimless design talk from CCP that will never manifest into anything original, as usual, so they will attempt to copy Destiny and sink their own ship.
It's not fun, it's work. I don't play games for that.
Open World Shooters are only bad when their implementation is bad. Almost no company has ever pulled it off before Bungie decided to give it a try. That means there was no template to work on to make it better so it's no surprise Destiny slipped up over here.
But now that Destiny is out, this means there is finally a template to work on as an example of what, and what not, to do. I hope CCP is paying attention to this using this example to make sure Legion doesn't fall into the same problem. They need to implement open world shooters just right in order to succeed. People didn't think Eve Online's gameplay model would ever work because no one ever tried it before but now Eve has become a successful game. Of course, that didn't stop CCP from making major blunders like they did with Dust and WoD.

Honestly I've started to realize that Bungie has recently gone down the same road CCP has already. Let me elaborate.
CCP Games: 1. Create Eve Online. 2. Compete against other games like EA's Earth & Beyond. 3. ??? 4. Profit. 5. Become overconfident. 6. Create Dust. 7. ??? 8. Fail to live up to hype.
Bungie: 1. Create Halo. 2. Compete against games like CoD and BF. 3. ??? 4. Profit. 5. Become overconfident. 6. Create Destiny. 7. ??? 8. Fail to live up to hype.
Um... what?

It's not fun, it's work. I don't play games for that. Open World MMO shooters have never been done. Destiny isn't even a open world shooter imo; the areas are quite small, and very disconnected. If you think Destiny is a Open World shooter, you must think Warframe is as well, as it's the same concept in a different type of view. Also, do you not know what Fallout is? if a MMO came out for Fallout, it would be a hit.
Hmm... I completely forgot about Fallout.
Also, I just remembered GTAV and Watch_Dogs. Those are open world shooters as well.

Unless I'm missing something, that is. An even more negative comment I heard on that CEO Pyrex video was that people were finishing the story mode in 1 day. Kinda crappy if that's true. So yea, Dust is still my fav FPS. I hope this Legion thing really works out.
People in the comment section of the Gamespot review have reported being able to complete the game in less than a day. From what everyone is saying, it's too focused on PVE just like Warframe and very little emphasis is given to PVP.

People in the comment section of the Gamespot review have reported being able to complete the game in less than a day. From what everyone is saying, it's too focused on PVE just like Warframe and very little emphasis is given to PVP. The only thing Destiny "needs" is a means of making PVP important. As for the completion time, someone already made the point that many good games can be completed fairly quickly. Warframe still has me as a hooked player precisely because it's PVE focused. DE, the developers for Warframe, never actually intended for Warframe to have PVP at all. But they still went ahead and provided the Conclave because some players just absolutely begged for it. The only serious player competition in Warframe are clans competing for control of some of the PVE nodes, through Solar Rail construction. Basically, economic competition through PVE territory control. And it works. Destiny doesn't need PVP to be successful. It's a very fun co-op game, because PVE is simply that good. It uses basic formulae for PVE, and it's fine. I went to Venus for the first time in Destiny last night, and had an awesome boss fight, with a couple of friends. My only regret about Destiny is that it's not on PC, and that is also the reason I will leave it behind when Legion has a playable iteration developed. Otherwise, all the criticism against Destiny is a lot of grasping for straws. Destiny is probably the best next gen console game available right now; and is arguably one of the finest games ever made on merit of the simplicity of its mechanics being so fun. @OP: CCP doesn't seem to have the budget and staff size of Bungie, so comparisons wouldn't be fair. It would also be unfair to expect Legion to come out in a manner timely enough to be a confronter of Destiny during its infancy, but I have no doubt that it will be a threat to Destiny if and when CCP delivers it.
I see your point there.
As for your comment to the OP, when you think about it, Legion is not even going to be able to compete directly with Destiny because Legion will be on the PC while Destiny is on the console. That's like saying Microsoft is competing with Walmart. However, I can see the player retention being a problem for Destiny since a lot of console players tend to move on to the next big hype while only the dedicated handful of players remain. Kind of like me with Halo where many players move on to the next iteration while I stick around with Halo 3 due to its simplicity and lack of hassles when it comes to multiplayer -- Halo 4's login process is not exactly hassle-free.
PC games don't seem to have that problem, or at least not as much as compared to consoles. A lot of PC players that I know in real life seem to stick around with one or two games or simulators for a very long time before they move on to the next.

Honestly, I'm getting so sick of DLCs. It's just another way of fleecing the consumer of their hard-earned cash.

I prefer a little DLC over producing unnecessary sequels (or completely abandoning a project to start another.)
I'm a harsh critic of CCP sometimes so I'm no fanboi. Also, I limited myself to just $60 worth of AUR goods. I'm not like some people here who dropped hundreds of dollars on this game at one time. I even recall someone who dropped as much as $1000 for Contact Locus Grenades which later got nerfed shortly after due to popular demand. Boy, did that guy rage or what?
