Nice Thread, players...!
I entered Dust just months before the May release---so I got taste (only a taste, unfortunately) of what you Beta-version players are talking about. The game was SUCH a great THRILL game for those last brief remaining weeks (into about July), because of the high risk moves each player personally felt she needed to make, both before the match AND then during the match: "I have a proto-HAV--I know it can kick behinds if I bring it out---and, Ohhh CRAP, an enemy just brought a proto Missile Enforcer into the fight.. do I RISK it and whip out my HAV-honey? God, should I do it?!!! I've got to, or we'll lose this match"
An std Grimsnes with good modules cost me a TON to invest, and this was at the tail end of the Beta period. I was terrified each time I decided to bring each vehicle or suit into the game---and it made it EXCITING! ...I still believe this is, and always was, the RIGHT way to play Dust 514. With some of the same nervous risk of losing your goodies that the EVE players have in their game. I hear that an EVE player who's blown up without having an spare clone in reserve, will lose not only her ship and her ISK, but all her accumulated neural-SP skills too. She starts all over at square-one!
...Yes, there IS an argument that can be made, that too much outcry and demands in our feedback/requests forums (and too much insame effort by CCP to consent to all that jazz in the forums ) helped derail the core mechanic of the game,... and make it a watery-kneed, scizophrenic and fraidy-cat version of the Chromosome days.
Universe of good wishes for the 49, especially CCP Eterne...
No story can have life without writers and publishers.

I miss Chromosome gunplay. It was so much better and smoother than what we have now.
I miss being able to see everyone because Cloaks didnt exist and yet scary shotgunners like Calamity Jane and Annie Oakley would still terrorize your team.
I miss all the good players the most though. Seems like the community was a lot more alive, thriving, and hopeful for this game. It's a shame things came to be like they are now.
We needed a Rattati on May 14, 2013 not 2014.

I would have much rather them implement the Bubble Shields in 1.8 before dropping the ball for Legion instead of cloaks.

Congratulations, forum-goers. You ruined the game.
Tanker tears. \o/ Tankers rarely died. They were the best at the game.
Closed Beta was the Golden Age for my kind..... so many epic fights both in CBs and in Pubs, we weren't so easily destroyed as we are now but at the same time we weren't impossible to kill like in 1.7, we were are the true equilibrium point. when we died we actually gave respect to those who killed us, now its every brain dead ****** can point and shoot and down goes 5 tanks.
Closed Beta Vet.

he means the marauders, the Sagaris and Surya, they became the proto tanks when the black ps havs were taken out. the marauders were the best tanks ever, I created my glass cannon fitting with the sagaris both in closed and open beta.

Jesus you would spawn right next to reds half the time. To *start* the match. Lol

Running proto 24/7 wasn't nearly as common as it is today, so when people brought proto, it usually means that shit hit the fan. I personally ran a BPO Assault for most of the time, saving 5 stocked proto suits for when the enemy brings their own.
So me and some of my team brought proto to counter the enemy proto. Then the enemy bring more proto of their own.
And so on until the match is like 50%-60% proto suits. It didn't happen all the time, but when it happened, it was epic, if only because the amounts of money thrown around in those matches weren't a joke back then.
#betamemories
Proto cost more back then. A heavy suit fully decked out cost well over half a million isk. There was a damn good justification for their performance at that cost, too. |

I remember early open beta when it would kill me financially to loose more than 2 adv AR's... a day... I feel like one of those old guys that say, "Back in my day you would see everyone running militia, but your old grandpapy, Oh I was running atleast 1 Adv AR a day, now you got your proto 24/7, Back in my day your grandmama was so mad if I spent more than 100k isk a week, now these chil'ren(?) spendin 20 mill isk a day, oohh boy those dare devils..." |
