I prefer the magsec over a regular SMG, anyone use the latter? The magsec is hard to aim, but high DPS....
Which is better, magsec or SMG??

I've been fond of the SMG since that bad boy is the little engine that could. I have only recently skilling up the Magsec (tried it when it was first introduced but I relented to familiarity) because I try to remain close to the all Caldari everything as I possibly can

I've been using the magsec as my main weapon. you have to really choose your confrontations, but once you get it up to a decent lvl, it's about as good as an AR, in my opinion.
I see more people get kills with the SMG though.

Smg is the king of sidearms. Ease of use and its large clip makes it the best sidearm. I prefer the ScP. That thing is like... death in your palms.

The SMG is the best sidearm. The kick from the Magsec makes it hard to tame.
Originally, the Magsec was supposed to have a suppressed version added which would have been nice for scouts and looks cool. Check it out:

i havent played since the magsec was brought in so im not sure how it handles but i rarely used a sidearm. I always preferred the scrambler pistol because its the closest thing to a revolver the game head for headshots and it had a good firerate. like the 44magnum from bf3. the smg is good for hipfire but i cant recall the last time i used one when i was playing. as long as i have ammo for my rail rifle or scrambler rifle i dont need a sidearm ever. Not sure why the assault suit even has a sidearm slot when its an empty slot 90% of the time. i just dont believe in sidearms or grenades, even when i had a plasma cannon suit. i want plasma cannon kills not smg kills. so i just leave the smg off. if i cant get a kill with the intended weapon its my own fault. im not gonna switch to a crutch weapon to save 20k.

I use both infrequently, but my take on them is that the SMG is viable right from the get-go, making it very newbie-friendly and a total monster in the hands of a skilled pro, whilst the MAG really needs skill points, as well as a steady and methodical aim, to really shine. Standard tier also felt underwhelming in terms of firepower. Frankly, I'd take the bolt pistol over it any day.

The best sidearm is the one that compliments your main weapon of choice; scram to melt shielding, smg to finish off armour, PLC to suppress groups and melt heavies, scram pistol to execute stragglers as you assault their position. I've never seen them as a crutch, just another tool of the trade with pros and cons to weigh and balance.

I have both proto and prof 3.
Close range the SMG is king, no discussion. At range the magsec should be better but the kick screws over your accuracy when ads, but when you connect it's a wrecking ball. The charge up time makes bursting the magsec difficult and as we all know bursting weapons allows you to be more accurate (reduction of kick). I don't think a sidearm (last resort weapon) should have a charge up time. The SMG saved me more times than the magsec no doubt.
Long story short, both the weapons have their place. I just think the SMG is better all around as it has no drawbacks.

Yeah, but if your using nova knives then you need the most versatile weapon...SMG is easy to aim with but the magsec does more damage, in my opinion. The magsec just is a lot harder to aim to balance this out |

That is why I use the magsec SMG over a regular SMG....my sidearm is knives here. If I was using a cloak field then I would switch to a submachine gun because of its high ROF

Which is better, magsec or SMG?? magsec is like 20 more dps but i found it hard to use.. i dont like iron sights and the hipfire spread seems too wide for a rail weapon... while conversely the hipfire spread for smg is rather tight but the range is short and requires atleast another 1million SP into sharpshooters to be up to par with magsec
yes the main differance is people will choose assault smg cause of the higher DPS yet higher cpu and pg cost cause smg feels familiar as it was the sidearm on most all the starter suits at one time or another.

As minmatar i will use nothing but minmatar weapons(nothing wrong in running your racial weapons and min assault gets a clip bonus to them so why wouldn't you). The SMG is fantastic as a backup or even a light weapon substitute if you find fitting a light weapon to cumbersome on fitting cost. Combat rifles burst can be a bit tricky up close timing the burst shots on a tricky scout so the smg is the perfect cqc weapon or when i want to save ammo on my main.
I have found new life in using the breach SMG's. Low RoF but high damaging and very accurate so it rips suits faster than you think. Besides, i just love the *Rat tat tat tat tat tat tat* muzzle noise of the breach as it just exudes authority when you fire it. I especially feel a smile on my face when i bleed out my latest prey with it too.

I dunno man I've been here since beta so I still personally feel most comfortable with the AR (specifically the standard version and the tac) and the regular SMG.
I just like knowing the quirks of the weapons. I do think the magsec is a good weapon for close range but I find that the regular SMG is actually a lot easier to get rounds out down range on a target. The magsec for me, even at level 5 still has way too much kick considering it is meant to be a more ranged weapon.
My verdict = SMG better all-rounder.

I have the Magsec with max proficiencies. I have the SMG at proficiency level 3.
SMG > Magsec.
The SMG is easily managed because of that awesome Minmatar flip sight. If the Magsec had a similar sight, or one like its cousin the Bolt Pistol, it would be easier to manage.
The SMG is also more manageable in a hipfire situation. To date, I don't often bother with the Magsec, even though I have it at max proficiency.
Think of the Magsec like the Rail Rifle's wild and promiscuous little sister. Don't trust it. Just hit it and quit it.

Since I appeared on MagSec like me. I am heavy and takes level 5 to use the Kalakiota. I would call great weapon. Although it has a bit of recoil especially in the early levels. If I started to kill my secondary weapon. Now I can not use because it does not fit on my mounts. But the SMG uses less CPU and RA and I'm starting to use it and although I do not think a despicable weapon. I better think about the MagSec
