This is how Active Scanners used to work.
Sadly, people found out, with a 2 second scan time, you could spin around. When this is done you effectively scanned in a 360 degree area around you.
Thus the age of Active Scanner 5 skills and Profile Dampening 5 skills were a must was born.
After a while, it was finally nerfed to what we have today and provided a more balanced gameplay.
However, note the animation in the video versus what we have today. It was a very nice animation but with the way active scanners work, the animation doesn't quite capture the exact scan angles of what you just scanned. As a vet of Active Scanners, I go off memory, but what about new players?
Therefore, I propose, if it can be done via a hotfix and not a client-side update, to "fix" the animation. I understand what the animation is trying to do, but with the new scan times being (something like 0.35 seconds?) very short, the white scan bars do not fully open up, the blue "scan" animation is not should at all, and the white bars close almost instantly.
(Insert "that's what she said" joke here.)
My idea is this:
1) Upon activation, white bars are shown and are instantly at correct scan angles. Maybe they flash 2 or three times for effect. (0.00 - 0.10)
2) Scan is done. A blue wave/pulse would be too slow, so maybe a blue pulse that covered the entire scan area? (0.10 - 0.25)
3) Scan finishes. Blue pulse and white bars instantly disappear or can be animated away (either bars close and disappear, or they can fade away softly). (0.25 - 0.35)
What do you guys think?

I use Active Scanners regularly. My only issue with them at the moment is the "partial scan" wherein the prescribed scan angle can be exceeded by rotating while scan is underway. Targets painted via partial scan are briefly displayed; ideally, partial scans would return nothing at all. That said, "partial scan" abuse is not widespread at the moment; I would not consider this to be a priority issue.

Right now even if you turn, it only gives a snapshot scan. In the time it takes you to turn on the highest setting, you only gain about 5 or 10 degrees, maybe not even that.
This "partial scan" do you mean targets on the edge of your scan or is it while you are rotating or both?
Back on topic, what do you think of new animations displayed on the mini-map so players, new and vets alike, can see exactly where they scanned?

Honestly I think we should get a 360 scanner but with a short range and cool down. The reason being is that scouts have a built in 360 scanner with ranges that can be anywhere from 40-70 meters. My scout has about 40 meter range and can detect any drop suit except double dampened scouts. With this it would be a lot harder for scouts to flank and would force them to use more dampener and better tactics. Not saying they are OP or anything but they should have a counter other than a scout itself.

I don't see why not. Not something I'd use (I like my range on scans) but I wouldn't be against a variant. You are right in saying it would have to be short range, but I see it acting more as a sonar. Scanning pulses every .5/1 second for X seconds, with a low(ish) tag time for people that leave the scan area. Cooldowns proportionate to scan times/meta like current scanners.
Very similar to how vehicle scanners work actually. My brain may have just conned me......
Anyway, could be interesting to see. |

Yes, I'm referring to the effect which occurs when rotating while "shooting" an active scanner. I can casually snapshot (or whatever you want to call it) over 180 degrees with a 60 degree scanner (using a DS3). Painted targets are displayed for a couple seconds rather than full duration. If I were running two scanners, it'd be quite easy to "sweep" a wide section of map, then follow up on any returns with a second scan.

They do have a counter. Two in fact.
The first is called shared passives. The second is called GalLogi.

Shared squad passive; two things wrong you need to be in a squad and your squad must have a scout that pick cloaked scouts and stealth suits passively.
GalLogi very rarely used scanner because 1) they are hell to fit even with fitting bonuses 2) they are extremely overpriced 3) their usage is extremely limited that you can't go around scanning everything so most of the time you will miss the scout and finally for actually getting wp the scanner is the worst tool.
Both counters are very limited and very situational

Shared passives to a squad to counter scouts. I use my passives all the time for myself but never tactically to hunt down scouts.
