You make a false analogy. A player in a dropsuit only has their dropsuit, a player in a vehicle has all the advantages that vehicle conveys, more speed, unlimited stamina, high HP, high damage, immunity (or near immunity) from small arms, etc. These advantages come with some disadvantages which balance the advantages, being able to jump in and out allows the pilot to have the advantages of the vehicle with none of the disadvantages. They also get essentially two lives for the price of one. This is inherently unfair.
I like to keep things simple. Some aspects should be regarded as such. Analogies help to view how an argument or how an idea can fit in many variables without losing its original thought. If your "what's fair or not fair" argument held credibility, it would be able to fit the mold in other variables.
So the analogy holds good. Dropship pilots able to escape death by ejecting is the same as someone almost being killed and runs behind cover. Both are instances of the enemy seeking to prevent death.
Tankers with HMGs jumping in and out of their tanks is a option that is afforded to players. It's no different than a dropship pilot who is providing transportation to his teammates and then picking them back up after an objective is met.
The "many lives" argument is...eh...shall I say a bit silly? If that's the case, players who come into battles with squadmates are essentially having more than one life. A logi who is repping is giving away 1ups better than green mushrooms.
What is fair? That now we restrict these players just so you can have the ability to kill them? Isn't that a bit unfair? That you cannot just accept that a pilot will eject or that a Sentinel with a HMG will use a vehicle to traverse the field and kill? I, for one, just like to say "okay, lets see if you can get away with it next time". That promotes healthy competition when viewed in that aspect.
Plus I feel you are only considering your argument for one aspect. How does it transcend in other scenarios that does not involve a HMG tanker who jumps out of his vehicle to kill you or a DS pilot who can no longer eject. Have you considered that in your thought experiments?

Jumping out of falling dropships I understand, but I think it needs to happen before the dropship starts freefalling. But getting out of tanks when they get destroyed is just stupid, I admit, sometimes very rarely I do that if I think I can be of some assistance to the team.

I never leave my vehicle now. If im flying as i hop out my face collides with the ADS/DS, if i hop out my tank i get one-shotted by a whisper cause i use my scout/frames for everything. I have a better chance of surviving the fall to my death.

CCP said they wanted to add a animation to getting in and out of vehicles...frankly you can do a half measure and have the player stuck in one location for X amount of time till he fades away, after that having a driver in the vehicle would just make it so that any passengers have a reduced amount of time or get in instantly...whatevs.
The sea of crap is quite an anomaly, staying afloat justified to see exactly what else is in there floating with you.
