Probably a bad question but are Plasma Cannons are useless as they appear? Hard to aim, in the time it takes to fire and reload you could have just used a Rail Rifle or Assault Rifle and gotten better results, and the damage doesn't look to impressive along with the PG/CPU cost being so high is this even a feasible weapon? |

It was meant to be an Anti Armor weapon, but there are some people who use it against infantry (albeit skillfully). It does a ton of damage on direct hits, but it's very unlikely you'll get a direct hit.
Be prepared to always load the weapon after firing it so if you fail to kill your target, you may consider switching to another weapon. However, if you manage to stay with your team and behind cover, you can continue to launch volleys at your enemy.
It's greatest strength is it's indirect fire. Similar to the Mass Driver, the Plasma Cannon can fire at a tank over some cover and hit it without having to stick your head out into it's line of fire.
In my experience, I have found my other AV weapons do the job just fine, Proxies, Forge Guns, and Swarm Launchers. Being a Plasma Cannoneer is an art, a skill, and some luck all rolled into one and I am amazed by those who do it so well.

Plasma cannons have always been the joke of DUST. Always.
Sometimes I feel as if I've encountered the limits of human stupidity.
And then, once more, I return to the forums.

Honestly... they are very difficult to learn to use, you need to reload with every shot, aim ahead of your targets, the projectile is highly visible, easily dodged because it's so slow and the splash damage won't kill most suits. at least not until you have seriously skilled into it.
however. when you learn how to use it, it is highly deadly vs infantry and able to damage vehicles, it uses less charge up than a forge gun and can fit on a light frame/commando. (gallente gets the racial bonus). it is a rare weapon with only a few players using it
it is also one of the most rewarding weapons in dust for sheer joy when you do get a kill, a very satisfying weapon when you are successful with it
unfortunately the amount of people who are playing for laughs or enjoyment even in pub battles has taken a massive decline and now dust is almost as bad as p.c for players taking it seriously and going hard proto fit etc.
which in turn makes it much harder to get to grips with the weapon and even less frequently something you can use as recently you need to play seriously to in order to compete with the try hards.
and to finish.. you will NEVER see a plc in a pc match.

Bravo!
Snake, that has got to be the best and most informative intel on the Plasma Cannon I've ever read. I do Dropships, and all through the learning curve (a DS has a very LONG learning curve--mutha of all things ) it was the Forge Gun or Rail that drivers were told to fear----nobody talked enough, if at all, about the OTHER hand-held AV weapon, the Plasma Cannon.
I've never picked up one, but always read where CCP repeatedly wants to "increase the user-difficulty on the Plasma Cannon",... so I logically keep thinking, they must be increasing the difficutly as a tradeoff for some IMMENSE killing power this thing must have.
...It sounds like I've been wrong in my guesses. But you make it still sound like a intriguing gun.
Universe of good wishes for the 49, especially CCP Eterne...

Thanks
it really is a fun weapon to use, but you have to be in the right frame of mind with it. when playing for laughs, so you don't mind dying it is unlike any other.
i tell you, the first time you see the rag doll effect that forces a heavy frame to do a star jump....
and as you point out about ads, it also has a hell of a learning curve. |

The Plasma Cannon works well in anti-infantry/vehicle, with the drawback of being a slowass cannon It doesn't fire fast enough to be a FoTm weapon (yet) but once practiced it is a viable weapon
Get used to it, find the situations it excels in and go blow some mercs up
Like others have said, it performs a 'suppression' role, with the bonus of incinerating anything The price for the potential OHK is the fact, it's slow, needs reloading often, obstructs view, charge time But all of the negatives are worthwhile if you use it effectively, it's a rare sight in Dust to see risk V reward actually function for weapons .. but the Plasma Cannon is exactly that - Risk Vs Reward
For inspiration, youtube - Plasma Carnage

After playing around with the Plasma Cannon for a bit I have come to a conclusion. This is the greatest weapon ever! Its the true gentlemen's gun! Requires quite a bit of skill to use, great for nearly all occasions and you can't even get upset when you are killed by it because the projectile is so slow and easy to spot! The only complaint I have is that it isn't 1 hit kill on ADS...if you are that low flying and slow you deserve to be killed. |

If you're a true aficionado you might consider speccing into the Gallente Commando for the role. The reload and damage bonuses serve most excellently and allow a proper backup weapon.
Since the speed buff on the projectiles, there's really never been a better time to be a cannoneer!
One fun note - A maxed Allotek PLC on a Galmando with a complex damage modifier will OHKO some vehicles.
The forums have ruined me.

Plasma cannons are no joke trust me. True they wont shine without proper aiming and it will take you some time to get used to it but I am loving it on my scout more than the shotgun.
Plasma cannon is damn good now, especially since the projectile speed buff :D

You have this all wrong. Why would anyone use the Rail Rifle when they can pick up a Sniper? Why would anyone use a Laser Rifle when they can use the Scrambler Rifle? Here's the thing, people are always trying to use guns that fit there playstyle. The rail rifle is a very easy gun to use and does not meet much of the standards for a challenging weapon. People often see me running an Allotek Plasma Cannon and Flaylock pistol. This is because I take the trash CCP manages to publish and I make it useful. The Plasma Cannon is a very bad weapon don't get me wrong but I enjoy using it. Its because you have to actually use tour SP to get the reload and ammo skills. You have to use your SP to get proficiency skills. I prefer using it with my Scout ck.0 and with a cloak field and a Nanohive. I use it specifically to be highly defensive on points. If you'd like me to attempt to teach you how to use it I would be glad too. Also I managed (I'm sure I'm the first one) to hit a double kill from 350m with my Plasma Cannon.

Just to clear up some discrepancies here.
The Plasma Cannon is an anti shield weapon in terms of its anti-vehicle capabilities. Against shield tanks it does some serious damage. Against armour tanks it is somewhat less effective.
The Plasma Cannon is an anti everything weapon. As adept as killing infantry and tanked suits as it is at damaging dropships tanks and other forms of vehicle.
At first it may not seem like much, but over time once you get used to it and start to actually put some good amount of skill points into the weapon it really is a lot of fun to use.
Personally right now my go to thing to do when I play dust is - KLA Plasma Cannon, on my dragonfly Gallente scout, 3 x complex kin cats and what ever you fancy in the high slot.
I play as a hit and run - 'run by' skirmisher. I use speed to get into position and then rain hell on the enemy.
But yea - TLDR with skill and practice the PLC is a great all around weapon.
